Principal's Report

25th Anniversary

Last Saturday saw Beerwah SHS and its community celebrate 25 years of educating the young people of the Glasshouse area. It was a great evening of entertainment, reminiscing and catching up with school friends and teachers from over the past two and a half decades.

The display of memorabilia from the past 25 years provided past students and staff with many a talking topic as people recalled their time at Beerwah State High School. As well as the all the photos on display, Kath Bateman had contacted and collated over 70 video messages from past students and staff, who shared stories of their times at Beerwah SHS and what they have done since.

There was a showcase of the Arts, with student displays of visual art as well as dance, musical and drama performances. It was a wonderful demonstration of the talent that we have at Beerwah State High School.

We were fortunate to have 4 of the schools 5 Principals at the celebrations on Saturday evening. Present were Mr Boyd Jorgenson (1998 - 2006), Iqbal Singh (2007 - 2010) and Graham Trevenen (2011- 2015) current Principal, Mr Robinson. Unfortunately, foundation Principal, Mr Mike Anderson was unable to make the celebrations but passed on his best wishes to all.

As the evening continued the crowd was entertained by local talent, "Super Dads" as well as teachers Ms Rebecca Stephenson and Mr Josh Curtis.

To conclude the evening a spectacular fireworks display was coordinated by Mr Peter Muchow in what was a fantastic ending to a great evening.

World Teachers Day

Friday 28 October Beerwah SHS celebrated World Teachers Day. It was the day where we acknowledge the great work completed by our teachers and celebrate the positive difference they make for students in their care.

Every day, they are making a difference, educating and inspiring young people in our school.

We also recognise the significant contributions they make in our classrooms and community every day.

Core Skills Test

Best of luck to our year 12 students who sat the Core Skills Test on last month. Students started the day with a hearty BBQ breakfast to make sure they were well fed and set up to attack the test and give it their best. Students used the get together to chill out and encourage each other to think back on all they had done to prepare for this test. Before entering the test room a loud "TEAM OP" chant was heard and it is a testament to this to this group of students that they understand the importance of each doing their best for the collective good. Students were positive about the writing task and many thought that the first multiple choice paper was OK as well. I'm sure when they finished the last 2 papers they breathed a sigh of relief and are now back to making sure they have all of their other assessments on track. Before you know it they will be graduating and moving onto the next phase of their lives. Good luck to all.

Positive Behaviour For Learning

The focus of the fortnight is 'Arriving to class on time'. The reason that this is our focus of the fortnight is because too many students are arriving to class late.

When the first bell rings the students should be making their way to class and stopping quickly at the toilet or to get a drink. When they arrive at their classroom they should get themselves ready for class. By the time the second bell rings students should be lined up outside the classroom with all of the necessary equipment ready.

Any students who arrive late to class can expect to receive a detention from their teacher and to make up the time they have missed. When students are late to class they miss vital information about the lesson including the learning goals and what they will be covering in class.

For students who arrive at class on time students have been receiving extra VIVO points from their teachers.

The Heads of Year and administration team have been conducting sweeps of the school in an effort to reduce the number of students who are late to class. Any student who does not arrive to class by the time the second bell rings, without a legitimate reason, will be given a 20 minute detention.

Please discuss the importance of this with your child so that they arrive to class on time and don't miss important information.

The annual chocolate drive is the P&C's major fundraising event for the year. About 30 keen students participated and around $4500 was raised with money going back into buying resources for the school. Trinity Gibson did an excellent job of selling 33 boxes of chocolates and for her effort won a giant 4 ½ kilogram Toblerone. Congratulations, Trinity and thank you to all involved for selling and buying chocolate.

News from the Resource Centre

On Thursday, 20th October Year 7 students from 18 schools on the Coast along with their teachers and family members gathered at Immanuel Lutheran College for the Annual Inter-school Readers' Cup competition. Each year, students work in teams of four to read six books in preparation for the event where they compete by answering questions about each book. Students have 20 seconds to answer each question. They are given points for each answer and the team with the most points wins the competition!

Congratulations to our students Jasmynn Shaw, Ethan Crumpton and Shanae Bryant who approached this competition with a sense of fun and optimism despite only having 3 competitors in their team. It is a very tough competition and they did their best on the night. Well done team!

Happy Reading

News from the Science Department

Last Term Year 11 Science in practice students have moved on to the next hands on learning project in class this week, working toward making their own electronic circuits. Students are issued a guide and array of components as well as an electric breadboard to construct and test their circuits on.

Term 3 year 12 Science in Practice students have been working on researching and designing rockets. The designs became a reality last week when students gathered on the oval to launch their creation and then depending on the effectiveness of the launch decide if any alterations to the nose cone, fins or overall weight of the rocket could be changed to enhance the height and trajectory before complete a second test fire.

Year 8 students this week have started "CASE" lessons. These are an opportunity for students to form small groups and look at a selection of prepared equipment and think about solutions to problems, identify similarities and difference items have and work as a team to draw conclusions based on the data they are given or produce. Here are some students discussing the relationships they can recognise in the shapes on the board.

Netball News

Junior students were involved in two netball carnivals last Term. The Year 7, 8 and 9 students competed at Pine Rivers in the third round of Super 7s while the Year 10 students competed in the Cougars Carnival at Bradbury Park.

Cougars is a tough competition, with the best of Year 10 netballers from schools across the northern suburbs competing. Beerwah entered the competition with one team. These girls achieved second place in their pool, a great achievement against teams who play consistently at competition level. Thank you to the Budds and the Setters for assisting with transport.

Three teams competed at Super 7s which has four levels of competition. The Year 9 team competed in the Reserve competition, missing first place by two points. The Year 7 and 8 teams were a mixture of experienced and new players and competed in the Cadet levels. While the girls weren't as successful on the day, they had a great start at Super 7s and their netball skills improved with each game. Lily Standring and Sarah Lillecrapp effectively coached and organised two of these teams for the entire day as well as undertaking all of the required umpiring. They were awesome role models for the younger girls and were integral to the smooth running of the day.

The final round of Super 7s is in week 4in Term 4. Training has started with the year 7 and 8 beginning netballers on Tuesday, Lunch 1, in the Student Centre. Players with no experience are very welcome to come and have a go.

Music

Conservatorium Trip

The excursion to the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University campus on the 19th October was a great success all 37 students and the 3 teachers (Will Audley ,Nathan Hill and Garry Buckley ), were treated to a full day of music , with a workshop, concert and tour of the facilities.

The workshop conducted by Dr Peter Morris, Head of Ensembles and Senior Lecturer in Conducting gave the students a firsthand experience of instruction and performance at an elite educational institution While this could have been a little nerve wracking Dr Morris made it an enjoyable experience working on breathing techniques for wind instruments and band warmups, as well as listening to two of our pieces Clocks and Metal! He even had guest conductors like our own music captain Ashleigh Clare on the podium, Ashleigh was not daunted by the task and put the band through its paces! The work shop was held in the Basil Jones Auditorium a rehearsal venue used by many professional orchestras in Queensland.

The students were then taken to the recital hall for a Big Band Concert featuring soon to graduate degree students from the conservatorium who played a selection of arranged jazz orchestrations which featured two female vocalists. The band was under the direction of John Hoffman, a New Yorker who has made Australia his home , a celebrated trumpeter and band leader-he has been a stalwart of the Jazz Faculty for many years. Our students were treated to jazz ballads and some up tempo tunes which really showed how the conservatorium brings out the best in their graduates. A wonderful opportunity to see outstanding performances on some of the instruments that our students play-great inspiration for our young musicians.

The last part of the day was organised by Jason Budge ,Manager of the Open Conservatorium who held a Q n A session for our students in the Grand Recital Hall. He spoke about the opportunities possible for study at the University for not only music but other fields within the arts such as drama and musical theatre : pleasing to see that a number of our students had questions for him and showed interest. The tour wound up at the Recording and IT unit of the building were our students got to see where Con students actually work on course material, compose and create.

Our students conducted themselves in a mature fashion throughout the whole day and were great ambassadors for their school .Hopefully they not only got some great instruction and sophisticated entertainment but also a taste of what it would be like to study and work at a tertiary level in an educational institution which has not only a national but also international reputation.

TEST-TAKING TECHNIQUES

What do you do in the few days before an examination?

At least a few days before the exam, make sure you do the following:

  • Plan out how much time you should spend on each section of the test.
  • By looking at past papers, get a feel for the types of instructions that will be on your paper.
  • Do some exercise so you can burn off the pent-up stress that can come before exams.
  • Look after your body – lots of water to juice up your brain, healthy food, decent sleep.
  • To calm nerves, make mental pictures of yourself sitting down and doing well in the test.
  • Purchase any equipment you may need, extra calculator batteries, pens, rulers etc.
  • Ensure you know what equipment is allowed in the test or exam.
  • Focus on reviewing the key points, perhaps a condensed version of your summaries.
  • Practise as many past test papers as you can get your hands on.
  • Check the timetable to ensure you have a clear picture of when each exam is being held.

The night before the test or exam:

  • Pack your bag with everything you will need for the next day, ensuring you have all necessary equipment.
  • Plan what time you need to leave to ensure you have plenty of time for unexpected delays.
  • Don't go to bed too late – you need to make sure your brain is fresh and alert.
  • Don't ring friends and discuss your preparation or the examination.
  • Just before you go to sleep, look through your notes briefly.
  • If you have a number of exams, check the timetable to doubly confirm the date, time and location of the exam.

The morning of the test or exam:

  • Visualise success. Before you get out of bed close your eyes and picture yourself going into the exam, doing well and coming out pleased with your efforts.
  • Review your notes. You are not doing intense study at this stage, just looking through and reminding yourself of the main things you want to remember.
  • Eat breakfast. Your brain needs fuel so eat a hearty breakfast so you can focus and concentrate in the exam.
  • Be on time. Make sure you leave enough time for contingencies so you won't be late.
  • Avoid negativity. Don't stand around in the group discussing what you did and didn't study.
