Principal’s Report

With the end of term upon us I would like to again take the opportunity to congratulate all the students who have achieved their “Personal Best” this term. Whether that be academic achievements, in Cultural activities, on the sporting fields, Congratulations to you, your family and your teachers. It is through these productive partnerships that high standards are achieved.

Reports

End of Semester report cards will be mailed to all families at the end of this week. If you have not received this by the end of the school vacation please the office administration when school commences on July 10.

There are a number of very important additional documents included in this mail out that need your attention.

  • BYOD program 2018
  • QParents information

As well as year level specific documentation including, 2018 Programs, Student performance interviews, new pedagogies for deep learning.

Uniform

Beerwah State High School is a uniform school and all students and families on enrolment agreed to the schools Dress Code. We ask that all students are in the correct uniform for the start of the new term. With cooler weather approaching parents/ carers are reminded that school jumpers can be purchased from the uniform shop. The other area of the Dress Code that needs attention is students wearing black socks. Again we ask that students and parents abide by the enrolment agreement and ensure students are wearing white socks.

Positive Behaviour for Learning

Term three will see the continuation of promoting “Positive Behaviours for Learning” in all year levels. There has been some recent publicity showing that Beerwah SHS has a high rate of suspensions. This is unfortunate, however the staff, the majority of students and parents I have spoken with agree that a strong stance on inappropriate behaviours is necessary.

The school values of RESPECT, RESPONSIBILITY and SAFTEY” guide our expectations for students, staff, parent/ carer and community behaviour in our school. On the wall of every classroom these three key words are displayed to remind everyone of the types of behaviours everyone needs to demonstrate to ensure we have a Respectful, Responsible and Safe environment. To assist us in achieving this goal, we encourage parents/ carers to talk about the behavioural expectations when discussing the school day with their child. We hope that parents/ carers will reinforce these expectations at home which will in term support us at school.

Parents/ Carers also need to be aware that unfortunately some of our students take it upon themselves to leave the school grounds or go into “out of bounds” areas without permission. This is a blatant disregard for the school rules and will be dealt with as such.

There are also some students who receive detentions who are not attending to these on a timely basis. In term 3, students who receive a detention before first break will be required to complete that detention on that day. For students receiving detention during or after first break the detention must be completed the following school day. If they are not completed within these time periods an after- school detention will be allocated.

Reboot

Whole-Brain teaching and learning

Stress is a state of mental or emotional strain or tension resulting from adverse or demanding circumstances. Excessive stress narrows focus, makes us self-orientated, causes negative feelings and puts pressure on our every decision.

Psycho-educating young people about the impact of stress on behaviour and learning is a powerful way to create effective self-management.

Our brains can be divided up into 3 different parts: the brain stem (Wild Brain), limbic system (Emotional Brain) and the cortex (Smart Brain.)

WILD BRAIN

EMOTIONAL BRAIN

SMART BRAIN

Each part communicates with each other and has a different function and each brain is absolutely necessary. To be happy and healthy we have to feed all three parts of the brain.

Reboot helps students learn and enact positive behaviour while building an aspiration for learning. Reboot works for everyone: disengaged and engaged students and all staff. Reboot addresses self-regulation and creates calm, happier schools by integrating social and emotional learning into the fabric of our school culture.

Through whole school check in processes students will learn to identify where they are at through the use of the 5 faces and in doing so will be provided with strategies to help them work through issues that are becoming barriers to their learning. Staff at Beerwah SHS are committed to helping students learn to self-regulate their behaviours so they can more fully engage in learning to reach their goals.

Design Technology News

We have had a very productive first Semester, with the introduction of new programs in our Junior Subjects. Our year 9 students have recently taken home a Condiment table from Construction, a Lazy Susan was created in Furnishings, and an LED lamp was the major project in Engineering. All of these projects have been engaging and student feedback has been very positive. Students have been involved in the Design Process for these projects and have found the process very rewarding.

Our senior students have been involved in project work in and around the school. Our Construction students have been making picnic tables and learning to plaster and paint. The furnishings students have learnt about stream line manufacturing and assembly processes, producing Adirondack Chairs. Our engineering students have been very busy in the welding bays. Early childhood students have been very busy on Industry placement and learning the skills involved with looking after infants. Our hospitality students have also been very busy learning on the job while attending a bar course and also planning for and then making the wonderful meals that were served at the recent theatre restaurant. All in all it has been a very busy term fort both staff and students alike.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those families who have paid their subject fees. All subject fees where due in Term 1. For all students with unpaid fees at the start of term 3 will do the subject by theory until such a time their fees are paid. If you have outstanding invoices please pay before the start of the new term to avoid disappointment.

This term, Year 10 students will be completing their SET Plans. If your child intends to enrol into Building and Construction Skills, Engineering Skills, Furnishing Skills, Cert II Hospitality or Cert III Early Childhood Education and Care, it would be desirable to book your SET Plan through Mrs Clark for a detailed discussion on the subject, ability to partner with Vocational Course, fees (VETis and subject fees) and extra obligations that these subjects entail. I look forward to meeting you and discussing your child future pathway with you.

Road Safety Course

Senior students from Beerwah High School have been given the amazing opportunity to participate in a unique road safety course. ‘Roadcraft Driver Education Specialists’ are based in Gympie and run a range of driving courses. They have offered a School Driver Awareness Course which runs over two days on their state of the art facility.

Students learn a lot about driver attitude, vehicle dynamics and the environment around them, but they also spend a lot of time behind the wheel of the Roadcraft vehicles. It is a very practical, “hands-on” training course.

According to Roadcraft: “statistics show that the first three months of a young driver’s provisional licence are the most at risk period in their driving career”. This particular 2 day course is offered to our students for a greatly reduced price of $195 per student – please note the normal price is nearly 3 times that.

If you are interested in your son or daughter taking part in this course in Semester 2, 2017, please contact Leanne Young or Mike Turner via the school office on 5436 5333.

Beerwah High Students win Sunshine plaza Breakthru Competition

Beerwah high school rock Band Stand Alone have taken out first place in the Sunshine Plaza Breakthru competition on Saturday the 10th of June. Facing tough competition from performers from Noosa High and Sunshine Coast Christian College Stand Alone, Kody Thomas-Roby, Mitch Markham and Connor Flanagan, wowed judges with their powerful, energetic performance as they performed their original song ‘The Reaper’. Both judges were incredibly impressed with the trio’s stage presence and the song and suggested that the group has a bright future. The group won $3000 dollars for Beerwah High as well as $1000 dollars’ worth of gift cards for themselves. The group has just also secured a spot at the Maleny Music Festival which should allow them to find a larger audience. Stand Alone’s EP Catering to Madmen is available now on iTunes and Amazon.

CONCERT BAND and STAGE BAND – MALENY SHOW

On Friday 2 June, the Concert Band and Stage Band performed at the Maleny Show. It was a very sunny, but cold morning and both groups played a varied program to an appreciative crowd. This was the first external performance for 2017 for the ensembles and the Concert Band began the morning, with students from Years 7-12 coming together to perform 21 Guns, Dynamite, Clocks and Poker Face.

After a short break and stage reset, the Stage Band took centre stage and performed a variety of works, including James Bond, Chattanooga Choo Choo and Rock this Town. This performance saw several students taking solos in the pieces and it was a great opportunity to showcase the efforts of these students so far this year.

Thank you to Mr Hill for organising the performance, Mr Audley and Miss Deady for their support and the members of the Concert and Stage Bands for representing Beerwah SHS Music so well.

Mathematics Update

Congratulations to these students who gained higher awards in the Australian CAT maths competition. The Computational and Algorithmic Thinking (CAT) competition is a one-hour problem-solving competition which seeks to identify computer programming potential—something which students might not normally have an opportunity to demonstrate.

School based traineeships/apprenticeships (SATs)

Semester 1 has been a rewarding and successful time for so many students. There have been 15 students signing up for school based traineeships and a number of students are in the application process for another four positions. In total 23 school based trainees and apprentices are continuing to work well balancing their school commitments with paid work and study. The work experience and skills gained are invaluable.

Students attending the SC Technical Trade Training Centre continue to expand their knowledge and skills and many are completing very successful structured work placements with local employers. Recently Ms Sharp, Mr Cavanagh and myself attended an information morning at the TTC. It was a great opportunity to see the facility and hear first-hand about the successes students are achieving through their studies and practical work. It was good to see Oliver and Darcy hard at work in the electro-technology workshop.

VETiS eligible students are able to complete expressions of interest for placements in courses at TTC in 2018. Courses on offer include automotive servicing, construction, plumbing and electro-technology. Look out for information early next term.

It was pleasing to see 11 students successfully complete a Certificate II Health Support Services through RTO Axiom College earlier this term and students will receive their certificates and bank QCE points very soon. Dual Cert II Salon Assistant & Cert II Retail Cosmetics students are half way through their qualification and regular updates on practical sessions are posted on our school Facebook page. Students may register their interest in these courses for 2018.

To assist our Year 10s as they prepare for SET plan interviews early in Term 3, there will be information available on all alternative pathways. I would encourage students to ask questions about all the different opportunities on offer.

Sunshine Coast Health Institute

Recently I was fortunate to attend a tour and information session at the new SCHI in Birtinya. It was an amazing morning spent seeing and hearing first-hand all about this world class state of the art facility.

SCHI is the tertiary teaching and research facility for the Sunshine Coast Hospital & Health Service. Located at the SC University Hospital, it is a multi-institutional partnership between SCHHS, the University of the Sunshine Coast, TAFE Qld – East Coast and a medical school provider which will be the center for research and training in our region.

The institute comprises of three levels including teaching classrooms, lecture theatre and simulation units where students studying to become health professionals can participate in clinical training.

As part of the tour, we saw simulation suites replicating an 8 bed ward, birthing suite, operating unit and intensive care unit. The medical equipment and resources used are exactly as those used by healthcare practitioners at the adjoining SC University Hospital. Some amazing technology is used to enhance and promote teaching and learning from the use of simulation dummies with pulses and human responses to the direct streaming or recording of activities from the simulation units back to classrooms

USC and TAFE East Coast have staff located at the Institute and together will deliver training in aged care, nursing and allied health as well support the professional development and training needs of the existing SCHHS staff. Diploma of Nursing students were present on the day of the tour completing assessment in the simulation ward unit.

What does this mean for Beerwah High Students? Pathway opportunities! As operations of the SCHI continue to be developed our students will be able to participate in certificate III courses such as Individual Support (Ageing, Home & Community), Health Administration and Health Services Assistance and Diploma courses in nursing and mental health services. With plans to develop research and clinical trials, the SCHI will be an amazing asset for our region providing opportunities to pursue a sustainable career in the health and wellbeing industries.

Year 10 Senior Education and Training (SET) Planning

As part of their progress through senior schooling and towards their career, all Year 10 students are required to complete a SET Plan through an interview at the school. The purpose of the plan is identify career goals, preferred pathways and subject selections for Year 11 and 12. This year, SET Plan interviews will be held on Wednesday 19 July at the school. Parents attend interviews with the student and their SET Plan Coordinator. More details will be forwarded to parents regarding the process for making bookings for the SET Plan interviews.

Career Pathways and Subject Information Expo

Our annual event was held on Wednesday 7th June and saw a new format for 2017. During their period 4 Life Skills lesson, Year 10 and 11 students attended presentations in the PA block. Representatives from Sunshine Coast Council, East Coast Apprentices, Sunshine Coast Technical Trade Training Centre, TAFE Qld and University of the Sunshine Coast each spoke briefly to students in relation to career pathways and study options.

The second part of the event began at 3:30pm and saw 24 external provider displays in the Student Centre, as well as information displays from all school subject areas. This year we were fortunate to add to our program with representatives from business and industry organisations, making the information available varied and extensive. Sectors of health, business, management, retail, tourism, hospitality, police and defence were represented, including:

Australia Zoo
Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service
Sunshine Coast Council
Qld Police Service
Australian Defence Force

These representatives made time in their busy work schedules to come along to speak with students and families one-on-one about careers in their sector and the suggested pathways to each career.

Other study and training providers attended to share information on the many certificate and degree courses that could be studied during senior schooling and post-Year 12 graduation, while apprenticeship network providers discussed traineeships and apprenticeships. We were fortunate to have the following people attend:

East Coast Apprenticeships
MRAEL
Busy @ Work
MEGT
Community Solutions
SCTTTC
University of the Sunshine Coast
Griffith University
QUT
University of Qld
Australian Catholic University
Central Qld University
TAFE Qld
Unity College
2 Study
Axiom College
ACCCO
Site Skills Training

Special mention should also be made of Year 12 student Lleyton McMurtrie who came along representing the SC Trade Training Centre. Lleyton is having an extremely successful year studying Certificate II Auto Servicing at TTC and was on hand with centre coordinator, Deb McPherson to speak to interested students firsthand about his experience this year. Thank you for attending Lleyton.

Year 12 Student Lleyton McMurtrie representing SC Technical Trade Training Centre

Our hard working HODs and teachers presented great subject area displays as well and were on hand to particularly discuss subject selection choices with Year 10 students in preparation for completing their SET plans next term. Students were able to see displays of art, furniture pieces, science lab experiment, exercise equipment and work samples.

This combined approach of external providers and subject displays provided students with the opportunity to gather a broad range of information to assist them in making informed choices about subjects and pathways beyond school. Those who attended certainly gained valuable information for their Senior Education and Training plans and their pathway options beyond school.

The senior schooling team thanks all those who presented and displayed and took the time to be available for our students.

Youth Support Coordinator

Hello,

I am the Youth Support Coordinator at Beerwah State High. I am part of the student services team working to support disengaging students; or those at risk of disengaging.

As part of the Youth Support Coordinator Initiative; I will be facilitating a Restorative Yoga Program which will run for three weeks during Term 3. A qualified Yoga instructor who has a background in youth work will be running the classes. If the program is successful, we aim to run at least two sessions per year over the next two years.

The aim of the program is to support students who experience either specific mood disorders such as depression or anxiety; or, simply struggle with sadness and worry, or those who may feel isolated. The objectives include:

  • Increase Mindfulness practice (being present in a busy world – relaxing the mind)
  • Learning how to use Mindfulness strategies on a daily basis to promote more calm and reduce anxiety/stress/worry
  • Learning how to better regulate emotion
  • Increase self-esteem and confidence
  • Be more aware of physiological responses in your body to anxiety/stress/worry

I will be inviting students who are known to the student services team. However, if you believe that your child will benefit and you are happy to contribute $10 to cover the three weeks; please either contact myself; or, Mr Stead (Head of Student Services) via reception as soon as possible.

Please see letter below from the yoga instructor explaining the details of the program.

Thank you,
Marie Kelleher

Hi!

Restorative Yoga is about RESTing and RESTORing balance and harmony to our bodies and minds. In Restorative yoga we do fewer poses and we stay in them for a longer time. Over one session we might do 5-6 poses. This is not a dynamic yoga, you do not need to be any particular size or fitness level. This yoga is for EVERY BODY.

This yoga is about comfort. We use props like bolsters, blankets and blocks to ensure the body is comfortable and can find relaxation in each pose. There is no need to be embarrassed as every body is different and has different injuries, or different things going on, and requires different support. My job is to make sure you have everything you need to be comfortable and to relax completely.

What happens in our life is that we are all busy. Busy busy busy and stressed. We have too much going on, too much pressure in our lives, we are constantly connected to screens and the internet, and all the stress causes us to be in FIGHT OR FLIGHT mode. We are either going to FIGHT to protect ourselves, or RUN AWAY. Because we are constantly under stress, we don’t know how to switch off, and return to relaxation. We forget this simple act, and instead of being able to switch the stress response of fight or flight on and off, it’s on all the time. So in restorative yoga we consciously rest. We switch off fight or flight and activate the relaxation response. We will use yoga poses with props, breathing exercises (pranayama) and simple meditation techniques to help the body relax. And when the body is relaxed, the mind can start to slow down too. And then all the bodies innate healing mechanisms can start to work again and restore harmony to the body. After class, you will feel amazing.

Everybody needs restorative yoga, but most people don’t realise it! I invite you to come and try it, and I look forward to sharing this beautiful yoga with you.

Fiona Maclean
Yoga Instructor
