Principal’s Report

The selection process for the vacant Heads of Department positions in English and Science has been completed. We are pleased to announce that the successful candidates are Mr Iljiaz Memedovski and Mr Paul Schnieder, both of whom are in acting positions at the school currently. They will take up their permanent positions as of the start of term 3, July 16.

Last Tuesday, a successful parent information evening was conducted giving parents and students an insight into the significant changes in Senior Assessment and Tertiary Entrance (SATE). The most significant changes that were explained were around the calculation of the Queensland Certificate of Education and the change from “semester” based programs to “unit” based courses. Parents are also reminded of the Subject and Careers information afternoon on June 12. For more information of this event and the SATE information night see Senior School News

Congratulations to everyone involved in the Beerwah Dance Company over the past couple of weeks. The students involved were great ambassadors for the school at both Sunshine Coast and Brisbane Eisteddfod’s. The time and effort both in and out of school hours paid dividends with placings in both events with strong competition from both state and private schools. Well done and thank you must also go to Ms Rossberg and Ms Peters for their time and commitment.

The P&C have approved the new school jacket and are in the process of ordering. Students are able to get a uniform pass by paying a deposit for the new jacket at the Uniform Shop. The school is also in the process of ordering “blank” jackets that will be loaned to students who present at school wearing an incorrect jacket. This process will come into effect when the new stock arrives.

Year 10 Parent Information Session

Thank you to the Year 10 students and their parents for attending the Information Session on Tuesday May 22. Those in attendance heard about the new rules around the Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) and the new process around the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR). New terminology around subject classifications and the introduction of external exams was also discussed.

The next important date for Year 10 students and their parents is Tuesday June 12. This is the date for the Career Pathways & Subject Information Expo. This event is from 3.30 -6.00pm

Year 10s require a Unique Student Identifier (USI)

All students who complete a VET course are required to apply for a USI number and then are required to supply this number (USI) to the school. Year 10 students have started their Certificate I in IDMT course in VIN classes and as such require a USI number. Please find attached a link to a Student Quick Guide on “How to Create a USI” Creating a USI should only take less than 5 minutes online.

Future Pathways 2018

Term 2

School based apprenticeships and traineeships (SATs)

Congratulations to new school based trainee Zach Wilson who has secured a position with Riba Kastell Chartered Accountants in Maroochydore. Zach, who will be attending paid work one day a week and studying a Certificate III in Business, greatly impressed the employer during his interview and was offered the position on the same day. Congratulations Zach and best wishes as you commence on this pathway.

Zach is one of many students who are successfully balancing school studies with paid work and qualification studies. This takes commitment but students find it rewarding to develop experience, skills and knowledge with a bonus of being paid at the same time. Qualifications studied as part of a traineeship are funded under the User Choice incentive and so there is no cost to the trainee.

New vacancies continue to be advertised to our Year 10 and 11 students via school notices, on year level parades, notice boards and on our school Facebook page. Students are encouraged to also seek their own opportunities by talking with their current employers and networking with family, friends and neighbours.

Current Vacancies:

Cert III Business and Certificate III Hospitality – Hotel Maleny

The hotel has opportunities for students interested in the business side of running a busy hotel as well as for those interested in a hospitality pathway

Cert III Business – Maroochydore

An award winning photographic studio has a great opportunity for a student interested in a pathway in business.

Cert III Hospitality – Mooloolaba, Maroochydore, Buddina, Birtinya and Buderim

Academic & Cultural Cup

Monthly Riddle

We’ve almost tiptoed into the beginnings of winter, so this month’s riddle is designed to warm that cold and sleepy brain up whilst whipping out of bed and speedily whacking that freezing uniform on while doing an Irish shiver dance and drumming up an accompanying beat with your chattering teeth. The first twenty correct entries will receive 2 Academic & Cultural Cup points, 8 Vivo points and an entry into the monthly tuckshop voucher draw.

Email your answer through to academiccup@beerwahshs.eq.edu.au

Answer to last month’s riddle – lightning or thunder

I fly when I am born, lie when I'm alive, and run when I am dead. What am I?

Annual Beerwah High Spelling Bee

Nominations have been flooding in for the 4th annual Beerwah High Spelling Bee Tennis Tournament. If you’re up for a good time, battling in a friendly yet competitive environment, where it feels more like you’re playing an indoor sporting tournament rather than spelling to keep the point alive and mistakes and tactics are actually necessary for a point to end, sign up and see what all the buzz has been about over the last few years. You won’t regret taking a step to the left and trying something a little different!

There has been a slight reshuffling of tournament dates to accommodate alternate events being held for certain grades:-

Instrumental Music

On Tuesday 8 May the members of the Concert Band and Coalition Band had the opportunity to participate in a workshop with visiting guest conductor Mrs Alisa Jones. This was a great chance for the students to get some different ideas on the pieces both groups have been working on and gave us some valuable rehearsal time ahead of the Fanfare performances in Week 7. A huge thank you to Mrs Jones for her inspirational visit and the very best of luck to all members of both ensembles. The Concert Band, Coalition Band and Stage Band will also be performing at the Maleny Show in Week 7, so it will be a very busy week of music making!

Costumes For The Arts Department

Huge thanks to Marie Davis who thought of Beerwah High and donated many wonderful costumes to the Arts Faculty recently. Mrs Davis spent many years putting these precious costumes to good use, entertaining audiences in our local area! Some of our Year 9 Drama students were excited to check them out! Can’t wait to see them on stage in a future production!

WHEELCHAIR BASKETBALL

Seven of our students in Year 7 and 8 from Beerwah High School in Education Services are participating weekly in a friendly competition of wheelchair basketball against Maleny High School. All students have a disability of some kind.

The program was created to provide inclusion for our student's with physical disabilities. It supports many of our students in different ways. No modifications are needed when playing this sport which is fantastic for students with a physical disability.

The students have played for four weeks and are improving each time. They have learnt to sit in the wheelchair and manoeuvre the basketball. It's helped students develop strategies for team building where decision making, athletic skill and friendly interaction are all evolving.

We must thank the Suncoast Spinners group headed by Sharon Hill at the University of Sunshine Coast who has organised the participation of volunteer coaches, Jamie and Brooke who assist the students learn techniques each week to enhance their game plan. They both guide the new Beerwah students weekly encouraging them to not give up, try again and learn about their strengths.

Thomas Robins in Year 8 who has a verified disability of cerebral palsy aided by his wheelchair has improved his skills so well since last year and now plays weekly in night competition. His brother, Jac, also participates.

The student’s skills are improving weekly in passing the ball and shooting goals.

It's so great to see students show confidence and resilience in a different setting and keep going to play an exciting game.
