Principal’s Report
Principal’s report
I would like to welcome everyone back to Term 3 and I hope that you all had a safe and relaxing school break. Term 3 is always a very busy term and we are already well underway with many school events. We successfully completed the final day of our Athletics carnival with many students also engaging in the Colour Run.
Student learning and Parent Teacher meetings
I hope that you all received a copy of your child’s end of semester 1 report card that was mailed home and that you took the opportunity to discuss their results with them. It was pleasing to see many parents and students in attendance for the Parent Teacher meetings. These meetings provide a valuable opportunity for parents/caregivers to meet with their child’s teachers and discuss how we can all work together to ensure students are on a pathway to success. If you were unable to attend these meetings please feel free to contact teachers at any time to discuss how your child is progressing in various subjects.
SET plan meetings – Year 10
All year 10 students are required to have a SET (Senior Education Training) Plan interview to identify their future pathway and career direction and to select their subjects for years 11 and 12. The Leadership Team conducted these interviews on Thursday July 26. If you were unable to attend an interview on this date please ensure you have contacted the school on 5436 5333 and made a booking to speak with someone in Administration so this can be completed by August 10. This is critical for us to plan our future timetable and ensure we meets the needs of all future year 11 students as best we can. Our current year 10 students will be the first to engage in the new Senior Schooling platform and the possibility of studying subjects with external exams. Information about the new system can be found on our school website.
Induction of new school leaders 2018-2019
I would like to acknowledge the great work done by our outgoing 2017-18 school leaders. We were joined by staff and student leaders from our Primary feeder schools – Beerwah, Beerburrum, Landsborough and Peachester, along with parents and friends, to formally welcome our incoming leaders to their new positions. I look forward to working with them over the next 12 months.
Winter school jacket
We have been advised that our new winter school jacket should arrive by the end of July. Once this jacket is in stock then the only jumper/jacket that students will be permitted to wear is the official school jumper/jacket with school logo. Year 12 students are able to wear their year 12 senior jersey.
Senior Students
Term 3 is a very important time for our year 12 students. Major assessment items contribute to their final exit results and we will be checking very carefully that students are actively engaged in their program of study and meeting the requirements for their QCE. Additionally those students who are OP eligible will be sitting the QCST in early September. It is important that all students are effectively managing their time and are staying on top of all their assessment requirements. We will be moving into a second round of Academic coaching for all year 12 students early this term.
Safety
I would like to remind parents/caregivers that when you are dropping students off to school and entering the school carpark area please do not stop in the entrance and exit of the carpark and allow students to exit the car as this is blocking traffic. This is creating a safety issue for students as well as having cars/buses stuck on the main road and causing further congestion.

Farewell to Suzanne Bishop
It is with mixed feelings that we bid farewell to our Tuckshop Co-convenor Suzanne Bishop. Sad because we will not see her happy face every day, caring for and feeding both students and staff as well as dealing with parents in the uniform shop and happy that she will be able to take a well-deserved break and find many other exciting things to occupy her time.
Suzanne has had a long standing involvement at Beerwah State High School. Her first of 4 children started at the school in 1995 and all 4 completed their schooling through to year 12. Suzanne began volunteering in the tuckshop in 1997 and in 2002 took up a part time paid position before accepting the role of Co-convenor in 2007.
Suzanne has developed great relationships with staff, students and parents over the years. For some students she is the first person they see each day as they come into the school. She has always given willingly of her time to go the extra mile and come in early to prepare and cook the breakfasts for special events, organise lunches for sports carnivals and cater for visiting school guests and staff gatherings. She has been actively involved with the P&C - assisting with the process to update and modernise our school uniform as well as working tirelessly to promote the school chocolate drive to raise much needed funds for the school.
Suzanne has always been a very strong advocate of Beerwah State High school and takes great pride in seeing the many students she has come to know over the years grow into wonderful young adults. She is always there to see them in their finest at the Formal and to wish them well as they walk out the school gate upon graduation.
Suzanne is retiring to travel and also spend more time with family. She will be missed by us all at school and we wish her all the best for the future.

Investiture of 2018-2019 School Leaders
On Tuesday July 24 Beerwah SHS inducted its new student leaders for 2018/19. Students from years 8 and 11 pledged that they would uphold and build on the spirit of Beerwah SHS and encourage, enthuse and empower fellow students to make a positive contribution to both the school and the wider community. These students have been elected to their positions of office by their fellow students and staff because they have already demonstrated that they possess the qualities of good leaders. They have a desire and are motivated to want to make Beerwah State High School an even better place for us all.
At this time we must also acknowledge the outgoing leaders from 2017/18. Together you participated in decision making about whole school organisation, identified problems that needed attention, raised awareness of school priorities to enhance student well-being, led specific programs and represented student ideas and opinions. You willingly gave of your own time and the school community thanks you for your work in helping to create the vision of student leadership at Beerwah High. You have set the bar high for best practice in student leadership.
I am extremely confident that our incoming 2018/19 team of school leaders will rise to the challenge and build on the strong legacy that the previous year’s student leadership team has left.
I congratulate you all and I hope you are excited by the responsibilities bestowed upon you and the challenges that lie ahead of you. I look forward to working with you all over the next 12 months and I have every confidence that you will all rise to the challenge and be excellent school leaders.

BYOD with OneNote
During term 3 we are working to ensure students are expanding the use of their BYO devices across a number of subjects. Teachers have been developing their skills in using Microsoft OneNote and we are working to setup Class Notebooks for a number of different year levels and subject across the school.
OneNote Class Notebook is a program that has a personal workspace for every student, a content library for handouts, and a collaboration space for students to work together on lessons and creative activities. This program allows teachers to view student work and give ongoing feedback to students electronically.
With OneNote, your child will be able to have 24/7 access to the subject content, with no loss of papers or scrappy notes. As a parent, you will be able to see what your child is studying and see the resources that the teacher is providing for them.
To access or download the software, Education Queensland and Microsoft have now released Office 2017 for free to all students. This can be downloaded by logging into http://webmail.eq.edu.au on the web using a student’s username and password. Once logged into emails the student can click on the words ‘Office 365’ in the top left hand corner of the page to be taken to the installation page.
This enables students to install the latest Office Suite on multiple devices including both PC and MAC computers, tablet devices and smart phones.
We are looking forward to students and teachers working together using technology.
Students without a BYO device can access the OneNote on their desktop at home to complete the tasks or view the resources.
If your student has already joined the BYOD program please ensure they are bringing their device to school. If your student is yet to join the program and already have an iPad or laptop at home check the minimum specifications outlined on our website before purchasing a new device.
If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact Marni Bradley.

Junior School Update
Last term our year 7’s held an expo with a focus on how to make Beerwah State High School more liveable. A panel of judges narrowed down the top 3 proposals who were then given the opportunity to pitch their idea to the Principal and the student councillors. The final aim of this was to convince the school community to action their proposal.
Our top 3 winners were the ‘Drastic Plastic’ team, the ‘Put It Out There’ team and the ‘Sport at Lunch Time’ team. These teams advance to a second round where they fiercely battled to persuade Mr Robinson and the Student Council that their idea would make the school better for all. There was a real Shark Tank feel to the presentations and the Q&A period tested the depth of each group’s plans. These students were well prepared and took real ownership over their ideas.
We look forward to hearing the final decision upon Mr Robinson’s return. It will certainly be a difficult choice.
Future Pathways
School based apprenticeships and traineeships (SATs)
As term 3 begins new vacancies have been advertised to our year 10 and 11 students. Details are announced on school notices, on year level parades and posted on notice boards and our school Facebook page. Students are also encouraged to seek their own opportunities by talking with their current employers and networking with family, friends and neighbours. Attending work experience is a great way to trial a position or an industry and allows a student to demonstrate their skills and potential to an employer. Students seeking school based traineeships and apprenticeship must be able to balance study, work, travel and school commitments.
Congratulations to the following students who have sought their own opportunities, completed work experience trials and successfully secured positions:

Academic & Cultural Cup
Monthly Riddle
Time to warm up those brains after two cold weeks of sleeping in over the School holidays! Just like last month’s riddle, this one is designed to exercise the grey matter and keep the cogs nicely oiled and warmed up (we might be possibly talking about different cogs and oil this month though; you’re not going to understand that comment unless you solve the riddle!) Once again you will need to use the alphabet number code to convert your answers into the three words required to earn 8 Vivo points, 2 Academic & Cultural Cup points and an entry into the monthly tuckshop voucher draw. (1 = A, 2 = B, 3 = C etc.) Good luck!
Email your answer through to:
