Principal’s Report
Seniors
I hope that all families had some enjoyable time together in the recent holidays as Term four is a time that is extremely busy for everybody particularly for our Year 12’s. With less than four weeks left, it is not a time to drop the ball. The standards expected throughout the year are the standards expected in this short period of time.
Term four is also the time where we acknowledge the success of students and teachers through a number of key events. One of those events was on last week – The Academic and Cultural Cup. We were able to acknowledge those students who have achieved success across the whole spectrum of school involvement. Congratulations to
Year 7 – Lily and Riley |
Year 10 - Ashley, Natalie and Nicholas |
Year 8 – Mackenzie and Noah |
Year 11 – Zoe and Salem |
Year 9 – Jessica and Harley |
Year 12 – Veda and Adam |
Our Awards night will be on Tuesday October 30 and I invite you to join us to acknowledge the students who have demonstrated excellence in Academic, Cultural, Sporting and Citizenship endeavours throughout the year.
As mentioned earlier that the standards and expectations have not changed and this applies to uniform as well. Boots (above ankle height) and nose rings are a couple of the areas that are not part of the school dress code. We ask all parents/carers to assist the school in maintaining the high standard we strive to achieve with all students.
During the morning rush hour parents who stop at the entrance to the carpark cause unnecessary congestion onto Roberts Road. Traffic back up is a serious hazard especially when buses are involved. To avoid this, parents are asked to be considerate and proceed to the carpark and pull off to one side to allow safe drop off of passengers.
Your support for the Chaplaincy raffle is greatly appreciated. The prize of a family pass to the Woodford Folk Festival with accommodation is a wonderful prize. All funds will go into maintaining the Chaplaincy service that Mike Turner provides. If you want more tickets please contact the school office.
Thank you to all our parents who have made sure that they have completed their financial commitment to the school for this year. Families need to ensure that all fees have been paid for 2018, to enable students to participate in the subjects they have selected for 2019. If there are any reasons that families are having difficulty in managing their financial commitments please contact the school administration.

Future Pathways
School based apprenticeships and traineeships (SATs)
A number of students have secured traineeships and apprenticeships over the past few weeks utlising the recent school holidays for work trials and job search. Some students are continuing with paid part time jobs and will be signed up to traineeships in the near future. It is possible to convert an existing position into a traineeship provided that the trainee and the employer can meet their obligations and responsibilities. These include:
Trainee Responsibilities
- Balance school study and attendance with paid work, qualification study and in some cases travel
- Commit to the traineeship and sign a training contract
- Participate in paid work, completing a minimum of 7.6 hours per week
- Participate and commit to qualification training provided by a RTO
- Remember that “school comes first
Employer Responsibilities
- Provide a minimum of 7.6 hours paid work per week
- Provide safe working conditions and workplace with 100% supervision
- Commit to the traineeship and sign a training contract
All school based traineeships and apprenticeships are coordinated with the school and require approval and signing off before commencement. Monitoring, progress checks, support and communication with the student, employer and RTO are ongoing.
Congratulations to our new apprentice and trainee:
Ebony – school based apprenticeship Commercial Cookery with Hotel Maleny. Ebony’s apprenticeship will convert to full time when she graduates in November.
Zoe – school based traineeship Horticulture with Waterworth’s Nursery.
Work Trials
Just before the holidays a number of Year 12 students participated in pre-screening interviews with Community Solutions. This led to work trials for three students in the areas of construction (carpentry) and electrical (air conditioning). These were valuable experiences and some excellent feedback has been received. It will be exciting to see what long term opportunities arise as a result.
Well done to:
Zac – carpentry
Joshua – carpentry
Jordan – air conditioning installation
At this time of year our Year 12 graduates will be kept updated of any full time positions, apprenticeships or courses of study as we hear about them. These will continue to be advertised on noticeboards, student notices, on parades and via the school’s Facebook page. Students should be encouraged to keep informed about new opportunities and consider updating their resume.
Recent advertised vacancies and links include:
- Full time dental assisting traineeships in Kawana and Buderim
- Bricklaying apprenticeships and work preparation courses

Academic & Cultural Cup 2018
On Wednesday, October 17 Beerwah High celebrated its fourth annual Academic & Cultural Cup. Teachers, students and special guests were entertained by an array of talent which included performances by our award winning Stage Band and Dance Company, and a beautiful harmonic performance by Beerwah High’s vocal group.
Congratulations to Team Tunbubudla, who became the first house that has managed to win the cup back to back; a huge accomplishment. For the next twelve months the beautiful Academic & Cultural Champions Trophy will once again be adorned by the majestic maroon mortar board of Tunbubudla.
A huge thank you to local businesses Australia Zoo, Aussie World, Hinterland Sports, Vianta Espresso & Exotics Coffee Shop, Beerwah Flowers & Gifts, Beerwah Newsagency, Baan Thai Restaurant, The Coffee Club Beerwah and Laserzone Warana for generously providing some wonderful age champion prizes. Their continued support plays a huge role in our endeavours to lift the academic culture of our school to even loftier heights.
Special congratulations this year to our Concert Band (Team Distinction), who took out a ‘Gold’ for an outstanding performance at the Victorian Schools Music Festival, a second at the Sunshine Coast Junior Eisteddfod and Bronze at the Sunshine Coast Fanfare. Dance Company (Team Distinction) once again had an amazing year, taking out two first and three second placings at the Australian Dance Pinnacle Challenge, one second, one third and one sixth at the Brisbane Dance Eisteddfod and three fourths, three fifths and one highly commended at the Sunshine Coast Dance Eisteddfod. Our school is very blessed to have so many talented and enthusiastic students on deck. It’s all sails up, eyes forward and full steam ahead into 2019!
This year ten new and three returning year level male and female champions were entered into the BSHS Scholastic Almanac. The beautifully leather bound book of parchment paper was signed by our champions, adding to the history of age champions which is held within its pages. Students earn ten points for achieving an A standard in a subject, five points for a B and one point for a C. Points are also earned for all extra-curricular endeavours undertaken by students using a scoring system of fifty points for a High Distinction, thirty points for a Distinction, ten points for a Credit and two points for participation. Examples of some extra-curricular endeavours this year include several mathematics, geography, literary and science competitions; the in-school spelling bee, trivia and mathematics competitions; Creative Generations excellence awards in visual art and excellence award for State Honours Ensemble at the Conservatorium; and representation of the school at events such as Anzac Day Dawn Service, Write a Book in a Day and Voices on the Coast. Students also earn points for being part of a school team within the academic and cultural fields. Points are allocated using a system of twenty five points for a Team High Distinction, fifteen points for a Team Distinction, five points for a Team Credit and two points for Team Participation. Examples of the many teams that students have the opportunity to be part of at Beerwah High are Dance Company, Vocal Group, Stage Band, Concert Band, Tech Crew, Debating and our Music Night and Dance Night showcases.

7K Humanities Update
On October 16, Marney, Lily and Jessamy presented to a group of sixty teachers at a Deep Learning Lab at the Twin Waters Resort. We are immensely proud of the work that these students did and the outcomes of their project. These students joined the iEARN (International Education and Resource Network) which is the world's largest non-profit global network that enables teachers and youth to work with people all around the globe to make a difference in the lives of others. I am honoured to teach such amazing human beings. Here is what the girls had to say….
At the conference, we welcomed guests, presented a speech, and attended a workshop. We were invited to join this event as throughout the last six months we have been discovering ways to solve and experiment with the well know plastic issue. We talked about beeswax wraps, which are natural environmentally safe wraps that replace plastic wrapping. We also discussed trash traps, which are a new storm water system idea that stops plastic going into the ocean. They are made of a net, which is attached to the drain and catches the plastic, which is then melted and recycled into furniture. We also handed out flyers and brought beeswax wraps to give examples to the teachers. After we had delivered our presentation we went to a workshop with the president of the iEARN forum and discussed our ideas internationally. In this workshop, we created and explored ideas of the ideal environmentally friendly city, using the seventeen international goals. We enjoyed working on this project and it has been a memorable and beneficial journey.

Chaplaincy Fundraiser
WIN A FAMILY SEASON PASS TO WOODFORD FOLK FESTIVAL CAMPING
In form classes students have received tickets to the fantastic Chaplaincy Fundraiser Raffle currently running over the next two weeks. We are very excited to be offering such a great fundraising opportunity to support our hard working and dedicated Chaplin, Mike Turner. A season pass to Woodford would certainly make a great addition to anyone’s Christmas holiday!
One $20 book (made up of ten x $2 tickets) has been issued to each family. We would greatly appreciate your support by selling these tickets to family and friends and returning the money and tickets to the Canteen by the end of Week 4, Friday November 2. More tickets are available for collection at the Canteen. The student who sells the most tickets in each year level will receive a prize. The winner of the raffle will be announced on a whole school parade on Monday November 15. We wish you luck in the draw!
(All sold and unsold tickets are to be returned to the canteen)

Roller Derby
Over the school holidays two of our students, Deegan and Jenna, both competed in the Roller Derby national championships as representatives for the Queensland team. Deegan (aka ‘Tenacious Deegs’) and Jenna (aka ‘Savage) were selected for the Queensland junior team out of a pool of three leagues and made the final cut when the team was narrowed down to an elite 13 players for the tournament. The national Roller Derby championship took place in Morayfield over three days and drew competitors from all over Australia. The Queensland team finished in second place overall to New South Wales, but the final game between South Australia and Queensland was incredibly close with only a three point difference and the Queenslanders taking the lead in the final thirty seconds. Jenna and Deegan have shown an incredible amount of commitment and skill in a highly tactical and very physical, full contact sport and are to be congratulated for their very admirable efforts.

Stem Update
Congratulations to Samson in Year 10 who was successful in his application to attend the University of Sunshine Coast STEM camp during the September holidays. Thanks to Samson for providing the following account of his experiences:
STEM Camp at University of Sunshine Coast
During the school holidays I went to the University of the Sunshine Coast to attend a STEM Camp. Only students who are undertaking multiple sciences in Year 11 were eligible to attend. Students from the broader Sunshine Coast Region attended.
During the first day of the camp we stayed at the University for most of the day and worked out how many g-forces a grasshopper would experiences when jumping. Surprisingly, the g-force experienced by a grasshopper (32) would kill a human.
The second day we did a workshop on prosthetics and virtual reality, payed visits to the Sunshine Coast Mind & Neuroscience Thompson Institute and the Bribie Island CSIRO research centre.
The third day we visited Helimods and Praesidium Global as well as participating in a JAR Aerospace drone workshop.
I enjoyed the Helimods the most as it is the most relevant to my career choice. It was interesting to see the different ways helicopters can be modified.
