Principal’s Report
Dear Parents and Caregivers
Dear Parents and Caregivers – Term 4, Week 4
Welcome to Term 4
How quickly the year has gone! I have now completed a full year at Beerwah and I’m proud of everyone who helps support the Beerwah school community to reach our goal of Success for All.
Focus for Term 4
Our focus for Term 4 is to do everything possible to reach our academic goal of 90% of our students achieving an A, B or a C on their final report card. It is our responsibility to ensure that we set the right conditions for every student to have success. We all know that this is sometimes difficult if a student is facing obstacles to success. Please contact your child’s teacher if you are concerned about their progress in any of their classes.
Academic success for all
Term 3 progress results showed the following:
- 94.9% of our students are meeting behaviour expectations at an A - C level.
- 89% are putting in an A - C level of effort.
- 88.2% of students are achieving A - C.
This is an improvement from Semester 1 results. Well done to all of the students, teachers and parents/carers for their efforts in this area.
Academic and Cultural Cup
Mr Voigt, who is one of our extraordinarily talented teacher aides, and his team have put in a highly impressive effort to continue the tradition of acknowledging students who show success in academic and cultural pursuits. It’s a wonderful recognition and while this year’s ceremony was a filmed version, it was still spectacular. Well done to the staff including Mrs Hansen, Mr Leftwich and all the team who made this happen. Congratulations to our 12 winners from Year 7 through to Year 12.
World Teachers’ Day
Today we gave out ribbons and badges to acknowledge our teachers, who genuinely make a difference in the way they care for and guide our teenagers. Thank you to the P & C who are hosting a burger lunch at 1st break near the canteen. Thank you to our Teachers – we appreciate you!
Welcome to our Year 6s
This week is an exciting day on our transitions calendar as we welcome over 100 Year 6 students from numerous state schools for a day of high school learning experiences. Thank you to Darren Rogers for his organisation and for all the staff who have been preparing lessons to implement on the day.
End of year exams
Good luck to the Year 12s this week as they begin their external exams. Reaching this point of Year 12 is a very important milestone and we wish our many wonderful Year 12 students all the best for their final assessment and for their upcoming graduation on November 18. Good luck also to our Year 11 students who are completing their Unit 2 assessments and will be commencing Unit 3 very shortly. It’s a busy time of year for our senior students.
Dance success
Beerwah Dance Company continues to enjoy marvellous success competing at the Australian Pinnacle Dance Challenge and were very thrilled to receive a range of places across Senior Jazz, Contemporary, Musical Theatre, Hip Hop, Lyrical and Junior Jazz and Lyrical. BDC also received the Adjudicator’s Choice Award. It was an absolute pleasure to witness a fantastic evening’s entertainment at the recent Dance Night. Beerwah SHS’s Dance night is a slick, polished, high quality, creative and entertaining performance and the accolades that are awarded to the team are justly deserved. Thank you to Ms Rossberg and Mrs Roedder as they continue to inspire our students to achieve success at so many levels.
Engineering success
Congratulations to Mr Philpot and our Formula One engineering students for their work recently at Raceday at Lakeside. A lot of work happens to build a car ready for the track and the skills the students learn are impressive.

Basketball success
The Open Boys Basketball team, coached by Mr Lancaster and Mr Philpot, had a successful win over Nambour in the grand final held recently at the USC stadium. The boys did Beerwah very proud with many impressive players. Well done – Go Crocs! It was also wonderful to witness the sportsmanship between staff and students at the recent Year 12 v Staff basketball play-off. The staff team won by the closest of margins and while it was competitive and very physical, the spirit of fair play was clearly evident.

Mock interview success
Congratulations to the Year 10s who last week participated in the mock interviews. I interviewed a number of students and they were well prepared for their interviews. It was delightful to see the Year 10s on assembly show genuine gratitude towards the staff organisers, Ms Liesegang and Mrs Forrest, by giving them some presents to say thank you.

Melodies success
Also, congratulations to the staff and students who are part of the range of musical ensembles and the vocal group. Mr Audley and Ms Dalzell and the team delivered a delightful afternoon of musical melodies. I really enjoyed seeing the collaboration between students and staff and the opportunity to perform just lifts the students to another level. Well done to all the students involved and I would certainly encourage and support more of these opportunities for our students.

Mental Health Week 9-17 October
Thank you and congratulations to all the staff from the Student services team who have inspired more awareness of the importance of acknowledging and having conversations about preventative approaches to managing mental health. The participation from staff and students in the many activities that were on offer demonstrates how much everyone's wellbeing is at the forefront of our priorities.
Link and Launch
I'm pleased to announce that Beerwah SHS has been selected as part of a cluster to offer a Link and Launch service for 2022. This service will be managed by the youth engagement team and involve the appointment of a pathways officer who will link with our Year 12 completers who are not engaged in education, employment or training after they leave school. This program has been piloted in a number of schools since 2019 and has had positive success. All of our current Year 12 students have been asked to provide the email addresses they will use next year so that we can assist them with their next step pathways.
https://advancingeducation.qld.gov.au/youth-engagement/strengthening-transitions
We are seeing some great successes being shared with our community via Facebook with over 4000 people viewing our content each week and we have seen a 64% increase in engagement and reactions. Our followers are enjoying our content, particularly the Staff in Focus posts. Well done to Mr Waldren for showing initiative in this area and I look forward to future posts.
Facilities Update
All of the facilities upgrades are progressing well, including student and canteen amenities, air conditioner installs in all classrooms, H block roof replacement and a refurbishment in one area of the Resource Centre. We have also received funding to replace the Student Centre roof and after many, many years of a leaking roof, we have been told it will be replaced over the Christmas holiday break. Our facilities management staff are working very hard at the moment to see that these upgrades are completed to a standard that we expect. Thank you, Mrs Croft and Mr Reed.
Uniform reminders - Monday is formal shirt day
Please remind your child about the need to wear our uniform correctly. This includes Year 11 and 12 students who are attending on Fridays or during external exams. Students are required to wear school navy shorts/skirts, fully black shoes and all jewellery must be removed as per policy. Please refer to the website for this policy. There has been a decline in compliance and we will be focussing on this for the remainder of the year. Presentation and appearance of our students is important and does make a difference to the operation and management of a school and its students.
Eat healthy, stay hydrated, exercise and sleep well!
Stay safe, Take care,

Education Services
Australian Native Bee Hive
Education Services students who participate in the Nursery Program now have the opportunity to observe the pollination and life cycle of Australian Native Stingless Bees due to the generosity of a local couple. Ed Reuss and Kia Hania have had the bees and the hive for ten years and have donated it to the school. The species of native bee in the hive is the Tetragonula Carbonria or ‘Sugarbag’ bee. It is a stingless bee, endemic to the north-east coast of Australia. It is known to pollinate orchids and collect pollen from cycads. The ‘Sugarbag’ bee produces an edible honey that is considered a valuable source of bush tucker. The bee hive will be maintained by Matthew Middleton from Bezotted who has offered to do this for free.
Well done to Helen DeVries for organising this fantastic learning opportunity for our Education Services Nursry students.

Alternative Program
Year 7 student Brianna, attends an alternative program in Education Services during period four on a Monday afternoon. Brianna has been working on this beautiful and intricate diamond art piece of a tiger since the start of term 3 and has just completed it. Brianna has dedicated one lesson over the last thirteen weeks to achieve her goal. She spent a lot of time carefully placing the correct colours of ‘diamonds’ onto the corresponding sections and the result looks spectacular! It is definitely something that Brianna can be proud of for years to come.
Well done to Brianna for showing lots of patience and concentration to achieve her goal

Academic & Cultural Cup 2021
Although life has had us dancing to a slightly different beat over the past two years, Beerwah High has been Stayin’ Alive, keeping Footloose, improving their Jive Talkin’ and focusing their Hungry Eyes on the things that help our hearts sing and minds breathe! Students have been powering through Covid restrictions and enforced postponements and variations with minimal fuss, displaying dashes of adaptability, sprinkles of enthusiasm, and splashes of ingenuity.
Ngungun house captains Bonnie Muller & Portia Quinn-Haines hold the perennial cup crowned with their team coloured mortar board
On Monday 18th October, Beerwah High celebrated its seventh annual Academic & Cultural Cup. In a year that has been a difficult one for all lovers of academia and the arts, our celebrations ventured to waters unknown with the ceremony broadcast over the watery wireless waves of the web! Although pre-recorded, our Beerwah High community was lifted by soaring voices, emotive and elegant dancing, expressive theatre and orchestral musings.
Congratulations to Team Ngungun, who claimed victory in a year that saw all four houses separated by a handful of points. Team Ngungun’s resplendent bright yellow mortarboard will adorn the top of the beautiful Academic & Cultural Champions’ trophy for the next twelve months.
Support from local business during the lifespan of this culture-bending initiative has been amazing and our awardees were thrilled to receive their prizes. Thank you to Steve from Vianta Espresso & Exotics Coffee Shop who has been an enthusiastic sponsor of our BSHS airliner from the very beginning, encouraging our students to reach for the skies and visit new and exciting destinations made available within the Academic & Cultural Cup world at Beerwah High. This year we also extend our thanks to co-sponsors Australia Zoo, Laserzone Warana, Blast Aqua Park Coolum, Aussie World, Next Level Ropes Course (Sunshine Plaza), Beerwah Florist and Spinners Bar & Bowl (Caloundra) for their generous support and encouragement.

Congratulations to our twelve year-level male and female champions who have shared in the prizes offered by our generous local businesses. They have signed and added their names to the beautiful leather-bound BSHS Scholastic Almanac, adding to the history of age champions which is held within its parchment paper pages. Students earn 10 points for achieving an A standard in a subject, 5 points for a B and 1 point for a C. Points are also earned for all extra-curricular endeavours undertaken by students using a scoring system of 50 points for a High Distinction, 30 points for a Distinction, 10 points for a Credit and 2 points for participation. Students also earn points for being part of a school team within the academic and cultural fields. Points are allocated using a system of 25 points for a Team High Distinction, 15 points for a Team Distinction, 5 points for a Team Credit and 2 points for Team Participation.
The enthusiasm and talent displayed this year by so many of our gifted students has given 2021 a huge injection of art, music and academic medicine!

What’s happening in our Junior Secondary classrooms?
Junior Digital Technologies and Humanities classes are in full swing for Term 4. Our Year 7 and 8 students are using the micro:bit to learn about networks and will soon be creating their own games for their peers where they will have to generate the code and problem-solve. Our Year 9 STEM students are busy soldering and using a range of equipment as they develop a robotic car design for their assessment this term.
In Humanities, Year 7 is looking at History Mysteries before presenting a multimodal presentation about Ancient Egypt. Year 8 is looking at the Spanish Conquest and will be involved in a cultural day in the coming week. Year 9 are preparing an Interconnections Report for Geography and investigating World War I in History. Our Business students in Year 9 are focussed on learning about Finance and the Economy through a simulation experience. With our Year 10 Digital Technologies students using EV3 robotics kits to develop solutions. Our History class engaging in a Depth Study focussed on ancient history as part of preparing for Year 11. There is certainly a lot of learning going on!

BYOD and Laptop Hire
As we approach the middle of Term 4, I know a lot of families will be starting to think about BYOD and Device Hire Options for 2022 to ensure that your child is able to remain connected at Beerwah.
There is no fee charged for students who bring their own device to connect via our BYOD network. If you are purchasing a device, it is strongly recommended that you refer to provide a copy of our purchasing letter to your preferred retailer to ensure that any device purchased will be compatible with the school network environment.
This document is available here
https://beerwahshs.eq.edu.au/SupportAndResources/FormsAndDocuments/Documents/Curriculum/BYOX_Letter.pdf
We also have a range of Laptop Hire Options where we can supply a device to your child for a fee. These options include
Laptop Hire Option |
Cost of Hire for 2022 |
Day Loan Collect n Go with same device loaned and returned to Resource Centre each day |
$50 per semester usage. Limited devices available. |
Take-home Laptop Hire |

They can access content and collaborate easily to support and enhance their learning.
Students are encouraged to on-board their own devices at home by following the instructions available on our website. Alternatively, our IT Technician is available to assist at the following times:

This year we were again supported by local business owners, employers, trainers and apprenticeship network providers, who kindly volunteered their time to act as interviewers. 125 students participated in a 10-minute interview for a selected mock vacancy. Our volunteers were very impressed with the way our students engaged throughout the day, even though some were quite nervous. This is an extremely valuable experience for students and all participants were congratulated on their year level parade.
