Principal’s Report
Dear Parents and Caregivers
Welcome back
I hope that you all managed to have a restful break and enjoyed all that the coast has to offer. We are so lucky to live in such a beautiful climate. I hope everyone is happy and healthy and re-energised for Term 2.
Respect ANZAC
The school’s ANZAC Day service was held last Thursday at school. I was filled with pride as our students showed an outstanding level of respect throughout the service. The school captains and students who participated in the service appreciated the school community coming together to pay our respects to those who served to protect us. Thank you to the Beerwah and District Sub Branch who helped us deliver this service.
School Culture
We have analysed student behaviours from Term 1 and have identified two focus areas for Term 2:
- respectful language to staff
- truancy
The leadership team are meeting to discuss the current consequences and changes which will help ensure our students lift to meet our high and explicit expectations.
Please work with us to improve outcomes for our students and our staff. It is absolutely essential that our students use respectful language to staff at all times (and vice-versa) and that all students are in attendance 100% of the time with both parents/carers and the school aware of the whereabouts of our students at all times. Students who truant put themselves and our staff at risk and this won’t be tolerated.
Report Cards
All parents should have received a Term 1 interim report card. This will be followed up with the opportunity for a parent/teacher interview. All parents/carers are invited to contact the school if you would like to discuss your child’s progress. The key questions that I would encourage parents/carers to ask teachers at the upcoming interviews are:
- What is my child learning?
- How are they doing?
- How do you know (how they are doing?)
- How can they improve?
- What supports can I provide (and you) provide if they are struggling?
We can celebrate a lot of success in the Year 7 results showing that at least 90% of students - on average - achieved an A to C in 80% of their subjects. Congratulations to the Year 7 teachers and this is another example of the success of the transition programs that are in place across Beerwah and our feeder primary schools.
Uniform
Thank you to parents and carers who are following the uniform policy. There have been a few changes and the policy on the website needs an update. Shorts have improved, but there is still work to do with the formal shirts on Mondays. If a student is out of uniform, they will be asked to change or parents will be notified. Students must be wearing the school jumper or school colours (navy blue undershirts are acceptable NOT black). No student should be in non-uniform items at any time regardless of a parent note. The only exemptions are being given by the Principal. Please ensure students are wearing their uniforms with pride, looking neat and setting a good example across our community.
NAPLAN
It was very pleasing to see our staff and students so engaged with the NAPLAN preparation lessons last week. I walked through most Year 9 classes and observed students and staff working very well together and the system also working effectively. This was very impressive. Well done to staff and students and also to parents/carers for supporting us in the implementation of this program.
Good luck to our students this week who are participating in a range of events including Football, Dance events, Eumundi Markets, Triathlon and Kokoda training sessions as well as District Cross Country.
Stay safe and take care
Kind regards,

Senior Deputy Report
Senior School Deputy
It is amazing how quickly the year is going and we are already into Term 2. Our seniors have been through various assessment periods depending on the year level and this understandably causes stress for many. I keep reminding them all of the mantra, ‘Inch by Inch it’s a Cinch. Yard by Yard it’s Hard’ to help them through this time.
Year 12 students are just about to enter another period of assessment with the end of Unit 3 by the completion of week 4. We need to encourage them to all stay on course and focussed through this next assessment period. This is their second last piece of assessment internally for those students completing General Subjects before the external exams in Term 4. I remind parents to check with their student to ensure that assignment dates for drafts and final assessments are clear and if needed that the extension policy is followed correctly.
Year 11 students are also just about to enter their next assessment period where they will be working on their second piece of assessment for Unit 1. A satisfactory pass for Unit 1 will give them one QCE point towards their goal of 20 points by the end of Year 12. Again, parents check in with them to ensure they are organising their time wisely to hand in all assessment.
This term the Year 10 students will have a strong focus around career development as we move into Term 3 where students will choose subjects for 2022 that align with their career pathways. We will be advertising dates and times for our upcoming Career Expo that is an important part of this process.
Lastly, I would like to express how proud I am of they way in which the Seniors have conducted themselves in school activities and in the community. We have had various activities like the Musical practices, Hospitality functions, ANZAC parade at school and on the 25 May at dawn and during the day and various excursions to Brisbane and around the Sunshine Coast. The students from Beerwah have conducted themselves in a fabulous way and this is something they should be proud of.

NAPLAN Online 2021
This year, between May 11 and 21, our school will be participating in NAPLAN Online. Every Year 7 and 9 student will be required to participate; however, parents may request that their child does not sit the NAPLAN test due to philosophical, religious or personal objections. If this is the case, we request that you contact the school as soon as possible to make arrangements for this.
In order to prepare students for the transition to the new online testing format, our Year 7 and 9 students participated in NAPLAN Practice Tests during Week 1 this term in order to familiarise themselves with the online testing environment. Please note: this was a practice only and no results/data were collected from it.
It is important to note that the data gathered from NAPLAN testing is used to support your student, and Beerwah State High School encourages all students to participate. Students not participating are still required to attend school on the test days.
Students who are absent for any test will sit make-up tests on their return to school.
Should you require any further information on NAPLAN or the school’s preparation of students in the lead up to it in May, please do not hesitate to contact me through the front office, or visit the NAPLAN website at the link below where you will find a section dedicated specifically to parents.
http://www.nap.edu.au/
About NAPLAN
NAPLAN assesses literacy and numeracy skills that students are already learning at school. On its own, NAPLAN is not a test that can be studied for and students are not expected to do so. NAPLAN is just one aspect of a school’s assessment and reporting process – it does not replace ongoing assessments made by teachers about student performance; however, students and parents may use individual results to discuss progress with teachers.
Read the NAPLAN Online information brochure for parents and carers.
https://nap.edu.au/docs/default-source/resources/naplan-online-information-brochure-for-parents-and-carers.pdf

Why NAPLAN is moving to online
All schools are to transition to NAPLAN Online by 2022, as the online format improves NAPLAN.
NAPLAN Online provides a better assessment and more precise results.
One of the main benefits of NAPLAN Online is that it uses tailored (or adaptive) testing. This means that students receive questions better suited to their abilities, giving them more opportunity to demonstrate what they know and can do.
Feedback from students is that they find the online test more engaging.
For more information about the move to online, visit the NAPLAN Online page of the NAP website.
For information about how your child’s data is handled please refer to the privacy documents attached on our website.
Test window
NAPLAN Online tests need to be taken in a specific order. The test window for NAPLAN Online occurs between 11 and 21 May.
See the full test timetable or download the NAPLAN Online test window infographic.

Scott Siddell

Weekly Woof
Woof Woof! Hello from Maggie the Therapy Dog in Training. I love my work. I know that when humans and animals connect, good things happen! And this week, lots of good things have happened.
With decreased blood pressure and reduced anxiety humans benefit psychologically and physiologically, from the Human/Animal Bond. It’s all backed by Science. I (being of the animal world) benefit from my relationship with humans too – I’m more likely to live longer and have a healthier life with quality care than if I was living in the wild. So thank you Beerwah State High School for this great opportunity to live my best life.
This week I’ve been supporting the students and staff the best way I know how. Lots of smiles and tail wags, hugs, pats and tummy rubs to you all. Here’s some highlights from my week.
I made friends with a guy who taught me to Hi 5!!!!
We are so lucky at BSHS to have a beautiful Bush Walking Track. It felt so good to get out and bout in nature.
My main role at work is to make friends and receive pats- I’m onto it!
Tummy rubs from Staff are awesome!
My in- class support helps students engage in their lessons.
Mathematics
Year 8
Year 8’s have been learning how to convert between common metric units for volume and capacity. Mr Mayes class had a practical demonstration of the relationship between volume and capacity. Students measured a variety of shapes to assist in creating formulas to calculate the volume of a variety of prisms. Students then converted between volume and capacity units to compare their predictions of the capacity of the containers and the real capacity.
Mathspace and Manga High
A reminder that year 7 – 9 students have access to Mathspace and all students have access to Mangahigh. The programs have inbuilt textbooks, videos and corresponding worksheets. Students can access these program at home to consolidate their learning.
Maths Tutoring
Maths tutoring is in the library every Tuesday from 3:00-4:00 pm. Students from any year level can attend. Students are asked to bring work that they would like to review.

BE ENTERTAINED!
Beewah State High School Presents
“Living With Lady MacBeth”…Something a little
different….with a Scottish flavour!
Beerwah High has a history of presenting musical comedy which provides plenty of laughs and fabulous entertainment. This year’s show will also satisfy these expectations but with some interesting changes.
When directors, Deb Holland and Bec Stephenson began planning last year they did so with covid restrictions in mind. Although the rules have been relaxed, they decided to continue with their original line of thought. So, “Living With Lady Macbeth” will commence outside at 2pm with each guest receiving their own box of delicious homemade morsels to eat picnic style while watching the physical theatre opening of the show. After this dream sequence, the production will then relocate to the Performing Arts Block where the curtains open to “Hip To Be Square”. Expect an eclectic range of music including Queen, Moving Pictures and Little Mix, some great dancing, an ensemble of nerds, emos, cool girls and jocks and some Scottish surprises.
The play flits around in time presenting the dreams of Lily, a girl who is perceived to be dull, untalented and ordinary. She wants to do something remarkable and prove everybody wrong; she wants to play Lady Macbeth!
Come and be entertained by our wonderfully talent Beerwah State High School performers! The production will be staged at Beerwah High at 2pm on Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 May.

TALENTED VISUAL ARTS STUDENTS!
Our very talented Art teachers, Ms Massingham and Mrs Jordan have been working hard with their Yr 10 art classes and students from 11 VAP creating designs for our upcoming Beerwah SHS theatrical production, “Living with Lady Mac Beth”. Students have been studying the use of graphic design in advertising and have turned their creative drawing, lettering and painting skills to producing a range of effective and eye-catching designs. Well done students! These designs look fantastic and we look forward to seeing them used around the school, and in the community to promote this upcoming event. Stymie
Stymie is an online, confidential messaging service. It enables anyone in our school community who may be seeing or experiencing harm or trauma to make an anonymous notification. Once the notification is sent, designated recipients within our school receive the information and respond according.
In 87% of cases of harm, there are bystanders present. While some people may feel comfortable initiating conversations about harm with others, many don’t. Stymie allows bystanders to remain anonymous, giving them the courage to overcome the fears and social pressures that prevent them from speaking up. It also relieves feelings of helplessness for those who want to assist their peers but don’t quite know how.
Students have been able to access the Stymie website for a number of years by going to the link below In addition to entering the website, Mark Lightbody (Year 9 HOY) has created a QR Code for stymie (See below). This will allow students to use their phone to scan the code and go straight to the reporting page. There are a number of these QR Codes located around our school.

If you or your student has any questions regarding stymie please contact your student’s HOY or myself in Student Services.
2021 Queensland Engagement and Wellbeing Survey

Future Pathways
Term 2 has seen quite a number of school-based opportunities being offered to students with many resulting enquiries. Just a reminder that vacancies are advertised through school notices, on parades, on noticeboards and through the school Facebook page. If interested, students should act quickly.
School-based apprenticeships and traineeships (SATs)
SATs provide students an opportunities to:
- combine training with paid work
- learn practical workplace skills
- gain QCE points
- continue full time school studies
While any new SAT opportunities are advertised, Year 10 and 11 students are encouraged to also seek their own opportunities by talking with their current employers or networking with family and friends. Please see me for details and helpful information.
We would also encourage parents and our wider school community to consider offering work experience placements or employing a school-based trainee or apprentice. There are a number of benefits to businesses when engaging in school-based arrangements.
- Employers can recruit keen young staff before they graduate high school.
- They can employ and train a young person part time in the business, meeting current and future needs.
- Traineeships and apprenticeships also give a young person realistic exposure to industry.
- Government incentives are available to employers.
Beerwah High places high expectations on all of our trainees and apprentices and students wanting to participate in school-based arrangements should be willing to effectively balance school, work, qualification study and, in some cases, travel.
Trainees are required to work a minimum of 50 days or 375 hours based on a 12 month full time nominal term. Generally, this would be to work a minimum of one day a week with extra days worked on the weekend and school holidays. The SAT must not impact on the school timetable and this is achieved with trainees and apprentices using their flexible learning day for work release. There also needs to be clear progress made in the qualification study, with all training plan deadlines met.

CERTIFICATE COURSES AND ETERNAL STUDY
Term 2 2021 TAFE Trade & Skills Taster programs
The taster programs commenced in Week 1 and Week 2 this term. The programs provide students with the opportunity to sample training in a TAFE environment. Over 40 Year 10 students have enrolled this year which is a great response. Students have committed to attending a TAFE campus one day a week for the term. Exciting new offerings have been in the health and community service sectors with students heading to the Sunshine Coast Health Institute and Mooloolaba campus for these programs.
WORK EXPERIENCE
Year 11 student Ella Eade attended an exciting program with Queensland Theatre in Week 1 of this term. Ella has provided this great update on her experience:
Student Pathways Program 2021
Place: Queensland Theatre,
South Brisbane.
Dates: 19 – 23 April, 9am – 4pm each day.
For the first week of Term 2, I had the honour of doing work experience at Queensland Theatre. Out of over 100 applicants, 14 were chosen and I was one of them! For a week we got to talk to the people that work in the company and what their roles are, including Lee Lewis – director and project planner and Steve Pirie – associate director and playwright.
Throughout the week, we got to do a variety of different workshops that are based in the arts. These included acting, marketing, finance, tech, costuming and lots more! For someone like myself, whose interests lie mainly in acting and performance, working a week in this environment was very beneficial. Not only did I get to experience the other sides of the company and get a feel for them, there was also a great opportunity to meet like-minded people who also love the arts. I have formed some strong relationships at Queensland Theatre and made a few friends for life for sure!
At the end of the week we were told that our partnership would continue for life. In a few months there will be a meeting via Zoom to see how everyone is doing and tickets to the 2021 season at Queensland Theatre have been discounted to us all in addition to our continued partnership. I really loved my week at Queensland Theatre, and I am very excited to work with them again someday.

Environmental Group
Unfortunately, because of wet weather and the need to cancel our first proposed date for this event, the numbers of volunteers reduced from 30; however, Clean-Up Day certificates were happily received by these volunteers who picked up and sorted over 1000 items of litter. They were amazed that over 60% of this litter consisted of chip, confectionery and food bags, all of which are soft plastics that can be recycled at participating grocery stores. The group is hoping to look into ways that we can reduce the use and wastage of processed packaging within the school. It is wonderful to see we have young people willing to support our environment and school campus. Ms Grant.
