From the Principal

Dear Parents, Carers and Community

Warm welcome back to our students for Term 2 and I hope everyone had a relaxing and fun filled break over Easter. We have had a significant increase in enrolments at the start of this term and welcomed approximately 30 new families to our Beerwah community.

There have been so many times that I have felt enormous pride in our students and these are just a few examples:

  • At both the dawn and main services on ANZAC Day, our students represented the school, showing outstanding leadership and respect.
  • At our recent cross-country event, our HPE department engaged our students with such a diverse variety of athletic events and students were very enthusiastic participants.
  • At the recent special assembly held last week, our students listened very attentively to Mr Mike Anderson, our foundation principal and guest speaker and were genuine in their thanks to our staff who have worked at the school for 30 years.
  • At the recent Sunshine Coast Dance Eisteddfod, I had the pleasure of watching our Junior and Senior students perform and I am just so impressed with their team work, their creativity and their support for each other. These performances will be on display in upcoming assemblies at the school.
  • At the recent off-site evacuation at Beerwah Bulldogs, our students were so well behaved. They followed staff instructions and showed a lot of maturity. It is a requirement that we do these off-site evacuations as a practice, in the unlikely event that we do need to evacuate from the school.

High Expectations

I have asked our staff to address the following issues with our students this week and would appreciate parents/carers also having these conversations with their children and supporting us with our goals.

Submission of Draft Assignments

A fundamental part of the teaching and learning cycle is that students submit a work in progress or a draft in order to receive meaningful feedback to achieve academic goals. I’m concerned when I hear that a large number of students are not submitting drafts. This places further workload on our staff who are required to follow up with these students and it also reduces the student’s ability to achieve success. Please monitor this with your children and stay in contact with your child’s teachers. This is essential and there will be significant focus on this from this point on.

Uniform

I want the students to wear their uniform with pride. There are to be no random items of clothing, no short stretchy skirts and no black items of clothing. Students need to be organised with navy blue tracksuit pants and school jumpers. If students are asked to go and change, then they are expected to comply. Any refusal or lack of respect will result in further consequences.

Out of Class and Toilet Vandalism

There has been ongoing vandalism in the toilets during class-time and at lunchtimes which has included wet paper being thrown around toilets causing toilet blockages, graffiti and removal of a door from hinges. Students found responsible will receive consequences and will be asked to explain why they should remain enrolled at Beerwah. Students have also been gathering in the toilets at lunch breaks and some students have also been found eating in toilet blocks. There is no place for this kind of behaviour and some toilet blocks will be locked if this continues.

Litter

We are all responsible for making sure that our environment is clean and tidy. Thank you to students who keep areas tidy and, when asked, very quickly pick up rubbish and put it in the bin. To those students who aren't following these expectations, I would ask you to think about the impact this has on our staff and to take responsibility for keeping the school clean and tidy.

Girls’ Mental Health

A very interesting read about our girls’ mental health crisis. Madonna King has a new book on this topic which is being released on 1 June – called "L Platers". We are definitely seeing an increase in anxiety in our girls. We will continue to allocate more resources for our students and we have a wonderful team of guidance officers, youth support coordinators, school nurse, school psychologist and external support agencies that are available to support all of our students.

30-Year Celebrations

Last week we celebrated a very exciting milestone.

In 1992 Mr Steve Woods, Mrs Diane Walton and Mr Mark Reed were appointed to iour school and all three are still working at Beerwah SHS today. They have attended this school for approximately 6000 days - what a commitment! In 1992 Mr Dan Leftwich was one of our foundation students in Year 8. In 1993 Mrs Kath Bateman and Mrs Deb Holland were transferred to the school making this their 30th year of service. These staff were acknowledged and thanked at a special assembly held on Monday 16 May. We were thrilled to invite Mr Mike Anderson into the school to make a presentation to each staff in front of all students and other staff. We thank them for the outstanding commitment they have made and the positive impact each and every one of them has had within our school community.

From Left to Right: Mike Anderson - Foundation Principal 1992 – 1997; Leasa Smith, Assistant Regional Director, North Coast Region; Dianne Walton – Teacher Aide, Mark Reed – Schools Officer Facilities, Lyn McDonald - Current Principal, Steve Woods - Teacher, Deb Holland - Teacher, Dan Leftwich - Year 8 Foundation Student and Current Head of Department, Kath Bateman – Teacher (formerly Head of Department - Communications).

Community Event – Term 3 Saturday 23 July 2022

We will be hosting two events on Saturday 23 July to celebrate our 30-year milestone. Planning is well underway and a committee has been formed to organise this event. Please keep an eye on our Facebook, Instagram or Alumni pages to see further details.

The P&C has generously donated $3000 to help the school celebrate this 30-year milestone. Thank you so much to the P&C for their ongoing and never-ending support for our school.

Kind regards,

Lyn McDonald

From the Deputy Principal

I am delighted to join the Beerwah State High School community and work with our young people, my colleagues, parents and our wider school community to help them prepare for a life of choice, not of change. I am passionate about engaging our youth, hearing their perspective and giving them a voice to engage them in their learning and support their wellbeing through this, at times, tumultuous journey. I bring 24 years of education experience to my role as Deputy Principal and have worked in a variety of school contexts, in varying leadership roles, this has taught me that persistence, dedication and passion help us to achieve our goals.

In our role as educators and carers, it is vital we prepare our young people for a changing 21st century world as seen below, and our Work Experience program offered in year 10 is a great opportunity for practical application of these skills. I encourage you to discuss options and help support your child in actively seeking their placement and engaging in the experience. We will be gathering information in week 7 this term to ensure that all students have acquired work placement and to support those who are experiencing challenges. If you have any questions, please email work.experience@beerwahshs.eq.edu.au with those.

21st Century Skills.jpg

I recently had the opportunity to join our Head of Student Engagement Mr Nick Stead at Caboolture High School for a Positive Behaviour in Learning workshop which was very informative and thought-provoking. It was interesting to see the various education pathways available to engage students in various pathways.

Beerwah State High School is a bring your own (BYOD) device school and we encourage students to bring their laptops each and every day for learning. Building ICT skills is imperative and it is an engaging and effective way to acquire knowledge and skills in their curriculum areas. If you require any support or have any questions about our BYOD policy, please contact us.

Digital Learning.jpg

If you have any questions, concerns, or would like to offer any feedback around what we are getting right or what we could do better at BSHS, I would be happy to hear from you via email csmit88@eq.edu.au or (07) 5436 5333.

Thank you

Spanish News

Spanish Film Festival Excursion

On Thursday, 19 May, a wonderful group of Year 10 and 11 students, Ms McIlveen, and Ms Williams travelled to Brisbane by train to the James Street cinemas to see “A todo tren! Destino Asturias!” as part of the Spanish Film Festival. The film, (reminiscent of Home Alone but on a train) was hysterical and Ms Williams was ever so grateful for the subtitles so that she could enjoy it too. Afterwards, we journeyed to Guzman Y Gomez for a Spanish feast, followed by a Spanish language scavenger hunt. A great day out was had by all and the students’ appreciation and comprehension of Spanish culture and language were enhanced immeasurably. A huge thanks goes to Ms McIlveen for her commitment to the faculty and our students, and for organising this important, curriculum-related event for our students.

Developed for families of secondary students with disability, these webinars explore Customised Employment as an approach to create employment or self-employment for a young person with disability.

Consisting of four webinars, the series is based on publications by Marc Gold and Associates, who pioneered this approach in the United States.

The Webinars:

Each webinar focuses on a different phase of the customised employment process. It is recommended participants attend the entire series live as the webinars build on each other; however, this is not essential. Sessions will be recorded and replays available for a limited time:

Cross Country

It was great to see so many students participate in this year’s cross country. We are fortunate to have a beautiful environment in which to run our course. Our students run through shade-covered bush tracks complete with water views, gully crossing and bridge crossing. Congratulations to the Tunbubudla Redbacks who narrowly defeated the Mikeetee Magpies to win the Cross Country House Trophy this year. Big thank you and congratulations to those students who represented our school at the district cross country event at the Big Pineapple. Conditions were challenging – running the hilly course in extremely hot and humid conditions - and we are very proud of your efforts.

Sunshine Coast Regional U14-15s Girls Rugby League State Championships

After a very late withdrawal, Year 9 student Jorden was called into the girls’ rugby league team to travel to Gladstone at the start of May. The girls play 4 games over 4 days, competing against teams from around the state. Jorden was a great addition to the team, even scoring a try in the last game. The team won their games against Capricornia, Northern and Peninsula, but lost to South Coast, finishing 5th out of 12 teams. This was an improvement from previous years! Jorden was lucky to play club with some of the team, and she attended most training sessions in the lead up to the state championships, so she knew the girls and the game plan. She learned a lot, played in different positions and enjoyed her experience representing the Sunshine Coast. We are always proud of our students (and staff) who represent our school with pride!

Science

The Science of Super Worms

Year 7 student Haley spends a little time each day in the science department heading up the Super Worm breeding program.

Haley feeds the super worms and beetles fresh fruit and vegetables every day and, with the help of student volunteers like Jasmine, inspects the trays regularly to monitor the health and growth of these fascinating Insects.

But Why????

That’s the best part! These insects are packed full of protein and nutrients, and the animals at Wildlife HQ just can’t get enough of them. Meerkats, lizards, frogs and some birds love Super Worms in their diet. With the involvement and commitment of more students, we hope to deliver approximately 3000 Super worms to HQ Zoo in time for the June/July school holidays.

Resource Centre

What’s on in Resource Centre

The Resource Centre is always a hive of activity during breaks and even before school each day.

Apart from the obvious attraction of our extensive collection of fiction and non-fiction books, we have games, puzzles and lunchtime competitions coming in the future.

“Technology Free Fridays” offer students the opportunity to put away their devices – phones, laptops or tablets - and engage in conversation with their friends, or play more traditional games or puzzles. Last Friday chess was the game of choice for some students, and another group has begun meeting regularly to learn the strategies behind solving Rubik's Cube puzzles. Thanks to one of our students Ben Henninger for initiating this activity.

Families of current students are welcome to access our fiction and non-fiction collections for other family members – just pop in or email us if you have any questions or requests.

Stay tuned for what’s next in happenings here at Beerwah SHS Resource Centre.

Future Pathways

During the past few weeks the Year 10 Work Experience (WEX) Team has been working towards finalising details of this exciting program. All Year 10 students will complete three days of placement in Term 3 ( 20 – 22 July 2022) and, in seeking their own placements, should consider their interests and potential pathways.

Teacher and student WEX packs were distributed during week 4. The pack contains a workbook which is designed for students to read and work through activities including sections for preparing, attending and reflecting on work experience. Students will be guided through the workbook by their VVP class teachers; however, it would be beneficial for students to discuss the program, their aspirations and suitable placements at home.

The booklet contains a work log which will be completed during placement and used later in SET (Senior Education & Training) Planning. The Work Experience Agreement, also included in the pack, will require signing by student, parent, employer (placement provider) and by the school principal. A letter of introduction to an employer is also included to assist students in their approach to employers.

Students and their families are encouraged to discuss careers, personal interests and seek placement with potential host employers. We encourage students to use their own contacts as well as consider all local businesses. Some employers who are offering potential placements include Bridgestone Select, Kunda Park and Maroochydore; Bell Stainless, Kunda Park; SC Council Parks & Gardens and Beerwah SHS IT department.

We would also encourage parents and our local community to consider offering placements within their own businesses or with their employers. All connections are extremely valuable and your support will assist to ensure student success.

Tafe Graduate Success

In 2021, Ella Eade, our Drama Ambassador and current Year 12 student, was nominated for the TAFE Brisbane Graduate of the Year award. During 2021, Ella studied Certificate III in Community Dance, Theatre and Events at the South Bank campus every Wednesday. Her teacher described Ella as a “stand out student” who was always prepared, committed to her studies and constantly striving for improvement. Ella set a great example to her fellow students, was professional in her punctuality, preparation and participation, and brought a sense of empathy and lively humour to her work. To be nominated was an amazing achievement and we are excited to share with our school community the news that Ella has been awarded TAFE Brisbane Graduate of the Year. Congratulations on your success, Ella, and thank you for being such a positive role model to your peers and to younger students.

TAFE Brisbane Graduate of the Year award recipient, Ella Eade

School based apprenticeships and traineeships (SATs)

SATs provide students with an opportunities to:

  • combine training with paid work
  • learn practical workplace skills
  • gain QCE points
  • continue full time school studies

Trainees complete their qualification over senior, graduating with a Certificate II or III level qualification, banking 4 or 8 QCE credits. Apprentices complete around a third of the qualification while at school and then convert to full time apprentices upon graduation.

While any new SAT opportunities are advertised, we continue to encourage Year 10 and 11 students to seek their own opportunities by talking with their current employers or by networking with family and friends. Please see me for details and helpful information. Students must be able and willing to effectively balance school, work, qualification study and in some cases, travel. School does come first!

Though Year 12 students cannot commence new traineeships in their final year, it is possible to commence school-based apprenticeships. Students seeking trade pathways are encouraged to network for opportunities for work experience now.

Parents and the extended local community are also encouraged to support our SAT program. If you work for, own or know of a business that may have the capacity to take on a student, please contact the school and ask to speak to the Industry & Vocational Training Officer.
