Principal’s Report

With the end of term upon us I would like to again take the opportunity to congratulate all the students who have achieved their “Personal Best” this term. Whether that be academic achievements, in Cultural activities or on the sporting fields. Congratulations to you, your family and your teachers. It is through these productive partnerships that high standards are achieved.

I will be taking some leave in the first three and a half of weeks of term 3. Ms Hayden will be the Acting Principal during this time and Ms Bradley will be the Acting Deputy for Years 7, 11 and 12.

Reports

End of Semester report cards will be mailed to all families at the end of this week. If you have not received this by the end of the school vacation please contact the office administration when school commences on July 16.

There are a number of very important additional documents included in this mail out that need your attention. We ask that where appropriate you complete the relevant forms and return them to the school.

Finance

Parents/ Care givers are reminded that all fees for 2018 need to have been paid or that an active payment plan is in place. Unfortunately, there is a significant amount outstanding for 2018 and the school will be contacting families through a combination of financial statements accompanying the report card and phone calls home in the next month. Please assist the school in making timely payments so as to support the educational programs that we offer. If families need support in this area please contact the school administration.

Uniform

Unfortunately the arrival of our new school jacket has taken longer than we anticipated. I have seen the new design and they look very smart. The P&C anticipates that the arrival of the main order will be with us by the end of week 1 term 3. It appears as though some students are taking advantage of the delay in the jacket to wear non-uniform jackets.

It is timely then to expect that there will be no students in non-school jumpers after the arrival of this stock. If a student presents at school after these jackets arrive, then they will be provided with a loan jacket/ jumper for the day.

Naplan Survey

Dear parents

As you may be aware, the Queensland Minister for Education has publicly announced an evaluation of NAPLAN in the Queensland context. This is to advise you that this evaluation has now commenced.

As you know, NAPLAN is just one indicator used in Queensland to assist in our school improvement agenda.

As NAPLAN has now been in operation nationally for a decade, Minister Grace is keen to hear the views and experiences of Queensland parents, school leaders, school communities and other key stakeholders.

As the first step in this evaluation, Dr Gabrielle Matters and Dr Robert Lake have been appointed to seek the views and experiences of Queensland parents.

A public parent survey is now open for the next several weeks and can be accessed here:

Shape your Destiny

Year 10 Workshop

On Friday 8 June all of our year 10 cohort participated in a motivational workshop with Darren Pereira, Success Integrated around the concept of Shape Your Destiny. In Darren’s own words he states: There is no better feeling in the world than to wake up every morning filled with purpose; knowing that I am living the dream life that I created. I wish the same for you. This seminar has been specifically designed to help you:

  1. Identify & align your inner most desires to your talents & unique abilities;
  2. Crystallise your dreams, set goals & develop a plan of action to achieve it;
  3. Develop powerful strategies to become & stay motivated at will;
  4. Boost your confidence & much, much more…

So give it 100% of your effort and get ready to Shape Your Destiny. Go For It!

For the next 3 hours students were motivated and challenged to

  • Identify their passions – what really drives them and excites them. PASSION mapping.
  • Search for their talents – we all have something we are really good at. TALENT discovery.
  • Question what inspires them, what’s worth fighting for, what difference do they want to make. Discovering your PURPOSE/IDEAL.

Combining all three where possible – PASSION +TALENT + IDEAL = Fulfilling career

This workshop enhances a lot of the work that students have been doing in their VIN lesson with Career education and the focus on the forth coming Senior Education and Training (SET) plan interviews. A key date to add to your diary for ALL Year 10 students is the SET plan interviews that will be held on Thursday 26th July. Information letter as to how to book a SET plan interview will be included in the Semester 1 mail out of report cards and a copy of this letter can be found in this newsletter.

Careers Expo and Subject Information Night

This event was held on Tuesday June 12 in the Student Centre. Thank you to Helen Skerman our Industry Liaison Officer and Jodie Runge our Guidance Officer for organising this event. It was great to see the many conversations occurring between students, parents, teaching staff and outside organisations. Year 10 students were able to gain further insights into the prerequisites for their chosen career pathways and were able to discuss possible subject choices for 2019 with Heads of Department and teachers. Year 11 and 12 students were also able to ask questions concerning their career pathways. Thank you to all parents and students who attended.

Certificate I in IDMT

There are a small number of Year 11 students completing this qualification from last year. It is imperative that this year’s Year 10 students complete this certificate this year. This will enable them to bank 2 QCE points towards their QCE certificate. Students require a Unique Student Identifier (USI) for any VET certificates to be awarded. Please refer to previous newsletters for how to apply for a USI is your child does not possess one.

Queensland Certificate of Education 2019

Changes have been made to the calculation of the QCE from 2019. Students must pass each unit of their General or Applied Subjects in Year 11 to gain 2 QCE points. In Year 12 they must have achieve a pass overall in Units 3 & 4. Subject selection therefore must take into account the student’s ability to succeed in the subject. SET Planning for Year 10 students will take place early in Term 3. Year 10 students have been exploring career pathways in Life Skills classes which will assist with their SET Planning interview.

Year 12 Formal

The formal will once again be held at the Events Centre Caloundra. It will be held on Monday November 12. The meal will be an alternative drop menu for mains and dessert. The cost this year will be $90. The photographer will be taking photographs from 5.00pm. We will also have two photo booths operating during the evening. Invitations will be sent out the first week of Term 3. All outstanding school fees must be paid prior to purchasing formal tickets.

Senior Leaders for 2018/2019

Senior leader positions for 2018/2019 will be finalised before the end of term with the Leader Induction Ceremony to take place on July 24.

New Pedagogies for Deep Learning

For Humanities this term we have been working on ways to solve the Drastic Plastic Problem. Our awesome Year 7 teachers, Ms Burchall and Mr Little introduced us to a new way of working in the classroom, designed around deep and inquiry based learning. We had to come up with an idea that made Beerwah SHS and the community more liveable.

Our group chose to focus on the issue of plastic in the ocean. Our main focus was saving our marine life. Lucky for us, our group is passionate about the treatment of animals. We figure the more we informed people about marine life, the more people will jump on board and try to find ways to give up or get rid of plastic.

Our teachers let us know early in the term that we would be showcasing our inquiry learning at an Expo. This was the incentive for us to design inquiry questions and find answers, as well as apply our digital skills. The really cool part of this project was that we communicated with people from around the globe. We blogged with schools in Taiwan, New Zealand and the United States of America. We were even invited to a conference in America! As a group we developed and filmed a video providing information about marine life and the problems that plastic is causing.

The Expo was a real hit! Heaps of parents came to see the work that we have been doing. We had a video, posters, quizzes and a stall and nothing was made from or out of plastic!! With all our hard work and dedication, we really hope that we can solve the Drastic Plastic issue and…….

Career Pathways and Subject Information Expo

Our annual event was held on Tuesday June 12, beginning at 3:30pm and saw twenty two external provider displays in the Student Centre, as well as information displays from all school subject areas. Participation was great, with eight nine families from Year 10, 11 and 12 attending this year.

We were fortunate to also include representatives from local business and industry organisations, making the information available varied and extensive. Sectors of health, business, management, retail, tourism, hospitality, police and defence were represented, including:

Australia Zoo

QLD Police Service

Australian Defence Service

These representatives made time in their busy work schedules to come along to speak with students and families one-on-one about careers in their sector and the suggested pathways to each career.

Other study and training providers attended to share information on the many certificate and degree courses that could be studied during senior schooling and post-Year 12 graduation, while apprenticeship network providers discussed traineeships and apprenticeships. We were fortunate to have the following people attend:

Students were able to see displays of art, furniture pieces, science lab experiments, exercise equipment and work samples.

This combined approach of external providers and subject displays provided students with the opportunity to gather a broad range of information to assist them in making informed choices about subjects and pathways beyond school. Those who attended certainly gained valuable information for their Senior Education and Training plans and their pathway options beyond school.

The senior schooling team thanks all those who presented and displayed and took the time to be available for our students.

VET and Certificate Update

Industry linked VET subjects on offer for 2019

Over the last few weeks, Year 10 students have been listening to subject talks focussing on the subjects on offer for students embarking on Year 11 in 2019. Our school offers a range of subjects that have strong connections with certain industries that have high job outcomes. These include the following subjects: Certificate II and III in Health and Community Services and Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care.

HPE Faculty – Certificate II and III in Health and Community Services

We are very excited to offer a new subject within the HPE faculty. With the growing health sector on the Sunshine Coast and the link to high growth in employment within the Health and Social Services industry, our school believes that the certificate course in Health and Community Services will create positive career pathways for our students. This program will enable students to complete two Certificate II qualifications and a Certificate III across both Year 11 and 12. The programs will be taught at school in partnership with Connect ‘n’ Grow as the registered training organisation.

The dual Certificate II program (Certificate II in Health Support Services and Certificate II in Community Services) are studied in Year 11, followed by either Certificate III in Community Services or Certificate III in Health Services Assistance to be studied in Year 12. The combined qualifications when complete will grant students a maximum of eight QCE points. It is advisable that students make contact with Mrs Fraser at Ngungun staffroom to complete an expression of interest form or email lfras57@eq.edu.au

Please click on the link below for further subject information.

Some interesting statistics from Gary Birmingham – National Operations Manager (Connect ‘n’ Grow)

  • The Department of Jobs and Small Business have advised that in the next five years just over one in four of all new jobs in Australia will be in Health and Social Services.
  • This sector, which currently employs 1.56M people in Australia is expected to grow to almost 1.82M by March 2022 - that's an increase of 16.1% [compared to 7.8% average across all industries].
  • This makes Health and Social Services the largest growth and employment sector in Australia.

Technology Faculty - Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care

The Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care course is studied over Years 11 and 12 and provides students with the skills and knowledge to work in the Childcare Industry. On completion, eight QCE points will be awarded for the course. In partnership with ACCCO (Australian Child Care Career Options), students will complete theoretical tasks during their lessons at school and attend work placement in an approved childcare centre on their non-contact day off. Students’ learn about the key developmental stages of a child, developing respectful relationships with children and how to provide appropriate care for children aged six months – five years.

Our school has developed a strong relationship with several local child care centres in Beerwah, Glasshouse and Caloundra. Through consistent application and commitment, students over the past few years have been successful in securing jobs at these work placement centres after completing their qualification.

Throughout the course students complete a minimum of 120hrs in structured work placement at an approved child care centre. During this time, they complete a range of practical tasks that mirror the job description of an assistant educator at the childcare centre. A first aid qualification (HLTAID004) is also delivered within the subject, specific to the setting of early childhood education. Below are student portfolio photos collected during their work placement.

Road Craft 2018

On the May 29 and 30, fifteen students from Beerwah High participated in the defensive driving course at the Roadcraft Centre in Gympie. The course was a mixture of in-class lectures and in-car training sessions where students were behind the wheel.

The students came away from the two day course with great new skills that they had practiced under the watchful eye of experienced instructors, but also with a greater appreciation of the responsibiliity they have when driving a car on the road.

One of our students said: “I have appreciated this experience so much. I have learnt and built on my knowledge and am able to take it away with me to be able to keep myself safe and other people. I appreciate everyone sharing their stories as it has reinforced why what we are learning is so crucial. Thank you for pushing us students to take part.”

Feedback from another student was: “I have really enjoyed this experience. I have learnt a lot of things that I will forever use and even teach my mum! LOL It was very valuable everything we learnt… from learning how to sit in the car properly to emergency braking, using threshold braking on wet roads. Everyone should participate in Roadcraft to learn how to drive safely and prevent crashes.”

Another student comment was that they “learnt that vision is the most important factor of driving. Vision, time and space.”

Year 9 Dance primary school visit.

As part of their NPDL project, Ms Peters’ Year 9 Dance students have been showing off their dance stories at Glasshouse State School, Landsborough State School and Beerwah State School. They have been working hard for the past term creating and practising and their dances in the lead up to their primary school performances. The students had the opportunity to contact the schools to help organise these performances as well as researching, choreographing, costuming and arranging props and music. Well done to the year 9 dancers on their excellent efforts.

  • encouraging children, staff and visitors to cover their mouths and noses when they sneeze or cough
  • making tissues readily available and ensuring used tissues are disposed of immediately
  • ensuring children and staff wash their hands regularly
  • cleaning our facilities and resources regularly
  • encouraging staff and children with flu-like symptoms to stay at home
  • strongly urging staff and children who arrive with flu-like symptoms to instead stay at home and encouraging them to seek early medical advice.
