Dear Parents and Carers
Term 2 has provided many opportunities for our staff and students to learn, grow and achieve Success. Some highlights from the term include:0
Reconciliation Week
National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.
The 2025 theme, Bridging Now to Next, highlights the ongoing connection between past, present and future. It calls on us to move forward together, using the lessons of the past to guide our collective future.

On National Sorry Day, held on 26 May, we acknowledged and recognised the experiences of the Stolen Generations. Our student leaders shared this message at a recent school assembly and our staff facilitated class discussions to support learning and foster a positive school culture.
The Kokoda challenge is about Courage, Endurance, Mateship and Sacrifice
To all of walkers who embodied these values- we are so proud of you. A heartfelt thank you to the staff who coached, encouraged, guided, mentored and supported our teams while taking on their own physical and mental challenges. This year, eight teams participated, including two junior teams – a first for Beerwah SHS.
Congratulations on this incredible achievement.
Staff acknowledgement
I am incredibly proud of our dedicated staff and would like to acknowledge the vital contributions of our teachers, cleaners, teacher aides, cleaners, support staff and our school chaplain.
National Chaplaincy Week
Last week, we celebrated National Chaplaincy Week and took the opportunity to thank our wonderful chaplain, Mike, for the care, creativity and kindness he brings to our school. Whether it is through lunchtime activity, a thoughtful conversation or quiet support behind the scenes, Mike helps foster a culture of compassion and connection. We also held our annual Chaplaincy Support breakfast, welcoming over 40 community supporters to thank them for their ongoing encouragement. Our Hospitality staff and students provided a delicious breakfast – thank you!
Artificial Intelligence (AI) policies in schools
As AI technology evolves, we are beginning to explore how it can enhance teaching and learning. Some schools are currently trialling AI tools to mark drafts and provide feedback. In Beerwah SHS, we’re investigating how AI can benefits both staff and students and we will be developing a policy in the near future.
In the near future, we will be developing a policy around the use of AI in schools for both staff and students. Some schools are currently part of a trial program where teachers are using AI to mark drafts and provide feedback and we are investigating how AI can improve learning for students.
Recently, staff completed a survey on AI usage, and many are already integrating it in innovative ways:
- Creating lessons, spelling lists, and simplified activities
- Drafting emails and developing scaffolding for assessments
- Providing feedback, identifying errors, and differentiating tasks
- Summarising texts for presentations and creating resources
- Generating data sets and revision questions in science
- Rewording complex concepts for better understanding
- Writing exemplars and modifying texts for different reading levels
- Using AI tools like Canva to visualise student ideas in The Arts
- Supporting students with novels and assessments as a teacher aide
The right to disconnect and email etiquette
Work-life balance is important for everyone. Under the Fair Work Act 2009, most employees now have a formal right to disconnect. We kindly remind our community that our staff also deserve time on evenings and weekends to rest and recharge.
While it is reasonable to expect a response to emails, please understand that this may take a few days due to staff workload and commitments.
Parent and Community Code of Conduct
We ask that all parents and visitors uphold respectful communication and conduct at school and during school activities.
Grant Success
We’re excited to share that we’ve secured funding for a new shed on a concrete slab behind H Block for our ITD faculty. This new facility will allow for:
- Safe storage of construction materials
- New bins for separating materials, reducing waste and encouraging recycling
- A dedicated 3000L water tank and pressure pump to support sustainable water use
Thank you to all parents, carers, and our local community for your ongoing support. We are proud of what we have achieved together and look forward to even more growth ahead.
I hope the upcoming holiday break brings you joy, rest, time in nature, and moments of laughter with loved ones.
Together we Learn. Individually we Grow. Success for All.
Warm regards,
Lyn Thomas

Leadership opportunities
This month we had five aspiring leaders participate in the Sunshine Coast Council Innovative Leadership Workshop at the brand-new Sunshine Coast City Hill venue. Workshops on entrepreneurship, leadership, self development were conducted by Lachie Smart, the youngest Australian to fly solo around the world, the Telstra Human Relations and Innovations Manager and Mayor Natoli conducting a Q&A session. This was a fantastic opportunity to meet other students in the region who have creative, innovative ideas and be sparked by industry professionals into aspiring to and achieving their goals.

We will be facilitating our Leadership Development Program with out aspiring year 11 students early next term. This is a five week program that explores the key skills of leadership through; courage, commitment, collaboration, inclusive communication, active teamwork, act with integrity, seek to influence and inspire others and contribute positively to our school culture. We look forward to working with our next cohort of exceptional young people.
Positive Behaviour for Learning – Focus Classroom Organisation
We implement a Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) framework which is a whole school evidence-based approach to behaviour support. PBL takes an instructional approach to behaviour, recognising that schools need to teach the behaviours needed for success at school and beyond. We have been explicitly teaching the component of Classroom Organisation this term focusing on: classroom setup, materials, seating plan, entering and exiting the classroom, asking for help, transitioning to another activity and getting attention. We recognise that demonstrating correct behaviours sometimes need revisiting and this has resulted in a reduction of our behaviour referrals for our year 8 students. A great outcome for our students, their learning and our teachers.

Rules for personal mobility scooters
Persons using a motorised scooter must comply with the rules for personal mobility devices and the general road rules as set by the Qld Government. Please see below link for the current Qld Government Road rules information.
Parents and students should note that to ride a motorised scooter, you must be either:
- at least 16 years
or - at least 12 years and supervised by an adult while riding the device.
Children under 12 years of age must not ride personal mobility devices.
Unfortunately, there have been repeated incidents of students riding motorised scooters fast and unsafe, riders not wearing helmets and multiple riders on scooters. The risk of injury is high and we have also received multiple complaints from local business and members of the community. We have had an incident, where a young person, on a motorised scooter collided with a car in the car park.
Thankfully the student wasn’t injured, however damage was sustained to the vehicle.
As a result of these incidents, and in furtherance of the road rules, no motorised scooters are allowed on school property at any time. Consequences will apply if this is prohibition is breached (school discipline and reporting to police). I ask for your cooperation to ensure compliance and the safety of our students and members of the community.
Pride Month, which is celebrated in June each year, is an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the contributions of the LGBTIQA+ community to Australian society, and to promote a culture of diversity and inclusion across the country.
A joyful day full of fun, food, and creativity!
MORNING: Breakfast Club

Beerwah SHS Dancers Take the Stage at Our Attic
Each year, we offer our BDC and Certificate III Dance students the opportunity to attend a dynamic and inspiring excursion to Our Attic – a day designed to extend their performance skills and expose them to a variety of teaching styles from professionals working in the industry.
Throughout the day, students participate in workshops across a range of dance genres, led by four experienced and inspiring industry professionals; Caitlin Cummins, Lilli Pinzone, Gabriel Herrera and Bree Walker. It’s an incredible chance for our dancers to step outside their comfort zones, embrace new styles, and gain valuable insights into technique, artistry, and versatility.
This experience not only enriches their current dance training, but also equips them with knowledge and inspiration they can carry into their future studies in dance.
We are incredibly grateful to Kristi Pinzone from Our Attic for hosting us and supporting the growth of our young dancers. We hope our students continue to learn, strive, and be inspired – both on and off the stage.
Lights, Camera, Action! BDC Students Shine in Professional Photoshoot
Recently, our BDC dancers had the exciting opportunity to take part in a professional photoshoot with renowned industry photographer Kate Whatman from Picture This Photography in Warana.
Over the course of the half-day shoot, students experienced what it’s like to work in a professional creative environment – capturing a range of stunning images including headshots, action shots, group photos, and individual portraits. It was a day filled with celebration, collaboration, and confidence-building as our dancers stepped in front of the lens.
These high-quality images will not only form part of the students’ individual professional portfolios, but will also be featured in upcoming BDC events and marketing, proudly representing the talent, teamwork, and spirit of our dance community.
We can’t wait to share the final results with you soon!

We can’t wait to bring the same enthusiasm and spirit to our next event at Pinnacle at the end of July. Let’s keep reaching new heights!
Year 9 Visual Arts Students Sculpt Success with Stunning Mask Creations
Our Year 9 Art class has been diving into the exciting world of sculpture by designing and crafting their own unique masks! Students had the creative freedom to choose between making a ceremonial mask, a festival/celebration mask, or a theatrical mask. They explored a variety of techniques and styles from cultures around the globe, drawing inspiration to bring their ideas to life. Using paper mache as their base, each student crafted a stunning sculptural piece that truly showcases their creativity and skill. We’re sure you’re as impressed by their incredible work as we are!
From Raindrops to Rhythms: A Day to Remember for our Musicians at the Maleny Show
On Friday, 30th May, our Concert Band and Stage Band proudly performed at the annual Maleny Show, joining a fantastic lineup of school bands from local primary and high schools.
Each group shared music they’ve been working on with their teachers throughout the year, creating a vibrant celebration of music education, student talent, collaboration and community spirit.
Despite the rainy weather, our students didn’t have damp spirits, and they delivered confident, polished performances that showcased their hard work, teamwork, and passion for music.
A huge well done to all performers and thank you to our dedicated music staff and the Maleny Show organisers for supporting youth in the arts. It is such a pleasure to be able to support local events and share our love for instrumental music with a live audience.
Are you keen to learn an Instrument?
If you are interested in joining any of our Instrumental Music programs, whether you’re experienced or just beginning – we want to hear from you! You have the opportunity to join our Multi-Instrumental Music program with a range of instruments or concentrate solely on Bass Guitar. See our talented music teachers for more information.
Our Drama Troupe Embraces the Art of Physical Theatre
Our Drama Troupe is going from strength to strength, continuing to develop and refine their performance skills. This week, students took part in a dynamic Physical Theatre workshop led by Mr Curtis, drawing inspiration from New Zealand’s renowned Red Leap Theatre.
The workshop focused on characterisation, physical storytelling, and using the body to create compelling visual imagery on stage. Students explored how movement and ensemble work can build powerful moments that captivate an audience.
Putting their new skills into action, the troupe collaborated to bring to life “The Glorgg” – a grotesque alien creature that will feature in their upcoming performance for The Scene Project.
With only a few weeks to go, this talented ensemble is building momentum and creativity like never before. Get ready – their performance is set to be unforgettable!

Supporting Teens Through Body Image, Bullying, and Belonging
Helping Parents Navigate Key Challenges in the Adolescent Years
As children transition into adolescence, they experience rapid physical, emotional, and social changes. These years are filled with opportunities—but also challenges that can deeply affect a young person’s sense of self. Three interconnected issues often surface during this time: body image, bullying, and the need to belong.
Body Image and Body Shaming
Body image is how young people see their own bodies and how they believe others perceive them. With social media, advertising, and peer pressure pushing unrealistic ideals, many teenagers feel they don’t “measure up.”
Sadly, these insecurities are often reinforced by body shaming—the act of criticising someone based on their appearance. This can happen in person or online, and it can be subtle (like “joking” about someone’s weight or shape) or overt (such as mocking, name-calling, or spreading rumours). Even well-meaning comments can unintentionally shame teens about their bodies.
Why It Matters:
Body shaming can lead to anxiety, depression, eating disorders, and long-lasting damage to self-esteem. It teaches young people to tie their worth to their appearance rather than their character, abilities, or values.
What Parents Can Do:
- Model body positivity by speaking kindly about your own body and others’.
- Avoid commenting on weight gain, weight loss, or appearance changes—especially in front of teens.
- Call out body shaming when you see or hear it, including on TV or social media.
- Emphasise qualities like kindness, effort, and creativity over looks.
Bullying in the Teen Years
Bullying often overlaps with body shaming, but it can also target race, gender identity, disability, social status, or other differences. It may be physical, verbal, emotional, or digital—and it can cause deep emotional wounds.
Victims of bullying may stop participating in activities they once loved, struggle with school, or become withdrawn. They may also hide their distress, fearing it will make things worse if they speak up.
What Parents Can Do:
- Keep the lines of communication open; ask open-ended questions about school and friendships.
- Watch for red flags like mood changes, sleep issues, or loss of interest in social events.
- Teach your child that everyone deserves respect, including themselves.
- Partner with school staff to address concerns swiftly and supportively.
Belonging: The Foundation of Well-Being
The need to belong is a powerful driver for teens. When they feel included, accepted, and supported, they are more likely to develop resilience, healthy relationships, and a strong sense of identity. When they feel excluded or judged, especially because of their appearance, it can lead to serious emotional distress.
What Parents Can Do:
- Encourage involvement in clubs, teams, or communities where your teen feels valued.
- Help them build friendships based on shared values, not popularity or looks.
- Remind them that their worth is not defined by fitting in but by being true to themselves.
- Let them know they have an unshakable place of acceptance and safety at home.
Let’s Work Together
At school and at home, we each play a role in helping young people navigate these critical years. By taking body shaming and bullying seriously and actively supporting inclusion and self-acceptance, we can help teens build confidence and emotional strength that lasts a lifetime.
If you're concerned about your child's well-being or want to learn more about what the school is doing to promote a culture of kindness and belonging, please reach out to your student’s Head of Year.
Together, we can make a difference.
Throughout the semester we have had two netball teams competing in the Sunshine Coast Interschool Netball Competition. This competition sees teams from both public and private schools across the Sunshine Coast competing on Monday evenings at Maroochydore. Our senior team played in the Senior Social division. Although this division was not playing for a trophy, the girls had a great time and playing very well throughout the season and demonstrated great teamwork. Thank you to Ms Jordan for your assistance with this team. Thank you also to our school umpire, Maddison Mahoney who assisted with umpiring duties throughout the competition.
Our junior team, coached by Ms Williams and including players from years 7-10, competed in the Intermediate Division and finished on top of the ladder at the end of competition rounds. They were successful in making the grand final against Palmview State College. This is the second year in a row that the junior team have made it into the finals. The grand final was a very close, hard-fought battle, with the teams being evenly matched. The team showed great tenacity and sportsmanship but we were narrowly defeated, going down 19-21.
Thank you to all parents and supporters who assisted with transporting girls to the games every week.
